Background. Menopause, also referred to as climacterium, is a period of multiple changes in the structure and functions of a woman organism. Objective. Determination of differences in body composition and fatty tissue distribution in women from groups discriminated based on their menstrual status. Material and Methods. The survey covered 312 women aged 38-75 years. Menstrual status of the surveyed women was established according to WHO guidelines based on answers to a questionnaire, and three groups were discriminated: women in the premenopausal period (group 1), in the perimenopausal period (group 2), and in the postmenopausal period (group 3). The following anthropomological measurements were taken: body height, body mass, waist and hip circumference, and thickness of 6 skinfolds. Their results enabled evaluating the somatic built of women in the separated groups. Fatty tissue distribution was determined based on TER distribution index calculated as a ratio of the sum of trunk skinfolds (TSS) to the sum of extremity skinfolds (ESS). Body composition of the women, including percentage of body fat, lean body mass, soft tissue mass, and total body water, was assessed using an IOI 353 analyzer by JAWON MEDICAL. In addition, percentages of women with underweight, normal content of fatty tissue, and these with overweight and obesity were calculated. The WHR index was computed in the case of obese women. Results. The highest values of body mass, hip circumference and most of the skinfolds were determined in the perimenopausal group, whereas the postmenopausal women were characterized by the highest percentage of body fat (PBF) and by the lowest contents of lean tissue, soft tissue, and total water content in the body. The highest percentage of obese women was found in the postmenopausal group, including 40% of them having visceral type obesity. The occurrence of the menopause contributed to changes in fatty tissue distribution, causing its shift from extremities toward the trunk. Conclusions. The study showed differences in the somatic built and body composition in groups of women distinguished based on their menstrual status.
The possibility of local reduction of subcutaneous fatty tissue was investigated in the project discussed in this article. Only one male participated in the experiment. During the experiment the participant trained his abdomen doing additional cardio training for two weeks, while in the following two weeks the abdomen was not trained at all. Instead of abdomen training, only cardio training was performed. This was repeated until the end of the experiment which lasted 9 weeks. The sum of thickness of all 7 observed skin folds was counted. Then, percentage of thickness of abdomen skin folds in relation to all skin folds was calculated. Each successive measurement was compared with the previous one to assess the decrease or increase of abdomen skin fold percentage in relation to all measured skin folds. We put the decreases and increases into a contingency table and calculated probability by using the Fisher’s exact test. Statistical significance was determined at 0.05 level. The local reduction of subcutaneous fatty tissue at abdomen was proven. However, the problem needs more scientific results to conclude this question completely.

Health-related quality of life after the surgical treatment of obesity

72%
The aim of the study is to answer the question: what is the range and character of changes within health-related quality of life (HRQL) in obese patients who have undergone surgical treatment (VBG - vertical banded gastroplasty or RYGBP - Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) in the period of three and six months after operation? Three groups of patients participated in the study: G I (n=33; BMI 49.90 ± 6.74 kg/m2) - tested prior to the operation, G II (n=17; BMI 34.26 ± 5.28 kg/m2) - tested six months after the operation, and G III (n=11) - examined prior to the operation (BMI 45.72 ± 5.27 kg/m2) as well as three months after the operation (BMI 36.10 ± 4.60 kg/m2). The Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) questionnaire was used as an indicator of HRQL. Surgical treatment of obesity resulted in significant positive changes in relation to the basic dimensions of NHP: energy, pain, physical mobility and in the influence of the current health state on selected spheres of life: paid employment, jobs around the house, social life, sex life, interests and hobbies, holidays. Significant changes in HRQL resulting from bariatric surgery occur in a relatively short period of time and are related not only to physical but also to social functioning.
Oznaczono stężenia wybranych insektycydów chloroorganicznych: α-, ß-, у- i δ -HCH, izomerów і metabolitów p, p'-DDT, oxy-chlordanu i heptachloru w wycinkach tkanki tłuszczowej pobranych z gruczołu piersiowego 67 kobiet w wieku od 15 do 74 lat. We wszystkich próbkach stwierdzono obecność ß-HCH, p,p'-DDE oraz p, p'-DDT. Stężenia pozostałych związków, wykrywanych w mniejszym odsetku próbek, były w większości przypadków zbliżone do odpowiednich granic oznaczalności.
