The field studies were carried out in 2002–2004 on brown soil of loess origin. In the experiment the following methods of plantation establishment were compared: direct sowing in the field (control); direct sowing in the field with cover of polypropylene sheet; by seedlings from plastic house; by seedlings produced in multicell propagation trays. There were two dates of leaf cutting: in August and before root harvest (October). Plants cultivated from seedlings were significantly higher and formed greater number of leaves as well as greater weight of above and under ground parts than in the cultivation from direct seeding, but the best results were obtained in the object with seedlings produced in multicell propagation trays. The use of polypropylene sheet positively affected the above ground parts of lovage, however caused significant decrease in root mass. Leaf cutting in the summer was connected with decrease in fresh root weight (by 40% in relation to plants with no leaf harvest) and essential oil content (from 0.85 to 0.52%). More active substances in lovage roots were accumulated in the plants obtained from direct seeding than from transplants.
The field experiment with one- and two-year-old marshmallow plants was carried out in Zamość on brown soil of loess origin in 2002-2004. There were four methods of plantation establishment: 1) direct sowing in the field (control object); 2) direct sowing in the field with cover of polypropylene sheet; 3) by seedlings from a plastic house; 4) by seedlings produced in multi-cell propagation trays. It was found that, in the case of one-year-old plants, all the methods of plantation establishment signifi cantly increased the yield and the number of marshmallow flowers, as compared to the control object, but the best results were obtained when the plants were propagated from seedlings produced in multi-cell trays. Taking into account the two-yearold plants, no signifi cant impact of the plantation establishment method on flower yield was found. On average, total yields of flowers varied from 17.2 dt x ha-1 in the first year of vegetation to 27.8 dt x ha-1 in the case of the two-year-old plants.
In the years 2000-2002 a field experiment aiming comparison of production effects of direct sowing and seedlings produced in multi-cell transplanting trays of chosen medicinal plants (valerian, lemon balm, lovage, basil, thyme, sage and rue) was carried out. The experiment was led on silty (loess origin) soil. Transplants production in multi-cell trays resulted in growth period prolongation, which had positive effect on plant size and raw material yields from the area unit. However, an increase of essential oil content in raw material obtained from objects with direct sowing was noted. On the contrary, essential oil yields of all compared species were higher on plots with seedlings transplanting. Therefore, on silty, encrusted soil (loess type) herbs transplants produced in multi-cell trays should be recommended for plantation establishment.
In four-year-lasting field experiment yielding and chemical composition of goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea L. ssp. virgaurea) herb depending on different methods of plantation establishment and natural growth regulator Atonik application were analysed. In the experiment different methods of goldenrod plantation establishment were compared: A. direct spring diaspores sowing, B. spring planting of seedlings, C. direct autumn diaspores sowing, D. autumn planting of seedlings as well as spraying with 0.1% solution of Atonik twice a year. Diaspores were sown directly onto the field in rows 40 cm apart, whereas seedlings were produced in multicell trays in plastic tunnel throughout 5 weeks and then transplanted onto the field in 40 cm × 15 cm raw spacing. Raw material was harvested every year at the beginning of blooming stage and after that chemical analyses comprised leiocarposide content (by HPLC method) were done. The highest yields of raw material were obtained in the second and third years of cultivation, while in the fourth year a considerable yields decrease was observed, indicating that goldenrod plantation should last two or three years. Higher raw material yields characterized by higher leiocarposide content were collected from the plots with spring seedlings transplanting or autumn diasporas sowing, thus these methods of plantation establishment should be recommended on commercial plantations of goldenrod. Additionally, plants should be sprayed with 0.1% Atonik in order to increase raw material yields.
The field experiment was carried out in Zamość on the brown soil of loess origin in 2002- 2005. There were four methods of plantation establishment compared: 1) direct sowing in the field; 2) direct sowing in the field with cover of polypropylene sheet; 3) by seedlings from plastic house; 4) by seedlings produced in multi-cell propagation trays. It was found that lovage cultivated from seedlings was characterized by higher root neck diameter as well as greater number of root branches. As a consequence, the obtained yield of air dry roots mass was higher than in cultivation from direct seeding, but the most successful method of lovage plantation establishment was by seedlings produced in multi-cell propagation trays. The use of polypropylene sheet caused a significant decrease of air dry roots yield in the first year of plant vegetation, but did not have any significant influence on the root yield in the second year. Chemical analyses showed small differences in the essential oil content in the roots. The greatest content of active substances was found in the one- year old roots of the control objects.
