The aim of the study was to determine the presence of the equine influenza virus (EIV), the equine arteritis virus (EAV), and the equine herpesvirus (EHV) in the conjunctival sac of clinically healthy horses. Fifty horses of both sexes and various breeds and ages were included in the study. Virus isolation was carried out in cell cultures (the Madin-Darby canine kidney, green monkey kidney and rabbit kidney cells) from conjunctival swabs. The hemaglutination assay was carried out in order to identify EI viral amplification. The study revealed no presence of the above listed viruses in the conjunctival sac of clinically healthy horses.

The study describes the shedding of a virus in the semen of a stallion persistently infected with equine arteritis virus (EAV) within 5 years in relation to the titer of specific antibodies and testosterone concentration. Between November 2002 and August 2005, the virus was shed continuously. During that time the titer of specific antibodies maintained on the same level (VN titer 128) and testosterone concentration ranged from 850.9 ng/L to 669.5 ng/L. No virus was detected in the semen both by inoculation of cell culture and RT-PCR one month later. The absence of EAV in the semen was found when the concentration of testosterone in the stallion's blood clearly decreased. In the next months, the concentration of testosterone returned to the normal level and shedding of the virus was observed again.
