The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires all inland and coastal waters to reach “good ecological status” by 2015. The good ecological status of shallow lakes can be characterised by clear water dominated by submerged vegetation. The ecological response of shallow lakes on nutrients largely depends on morphological and hydrological features, such as water depth, retention time, water level fl uctuations, bottom type, fetch etc. These features determine the “critical nutrient load” of a lake. When the actual nutrient load of a lake is higher than the critical nutrient load, the ecological quality of this lake will deteriorate, resulting in a turbid state dominated by algae. Climate change might lead to changes in both environmental factors and ecosystem response. This certainly will have an effect on the ecological status. As an illustration the results of a multidiscipline study of a shallow peaty lake (Loenderveen) are presented, including hydrology, geochemistry and ecology. Ground- and surface water fl ows, nutrient dynamics and ecosystem functioning have been studied culminating in an application of the ecological model of the lake (PCLake). Future scenarios were implemented through changing precipitation, evaporation and temperature. Climate change will lead to higher nutrient loads and lower critical nutrient loads. As a consequence lakes shift easier from clear water to a turbid state.

Tereny zieleni pełnią ważna rolę na obszarach zurbanizowanych, m.in. klimatyczną, biologiczną czy rekreacyjną. W celu właściwego kształtowania sytemu przyrodniczego miasta należy wykonać waloryzację przyrodniczą. Prezentowanymi tu badaniami objęto miasto Brzesko. Waloryzacja przyrodnicza została wykonana wg metody bonitacyjnej. Wyróżniono obszary miejskie należące do czterech grup, tj. obszary o bardzo wysokich, wysokich, średnich i małych walorach środowiska przyrodniczego. Na terenie Brzeska dominują obszary o średnich walorach przyrodniczych.

This research dealt to two grasslands potentially developing the same vegetation type because sited in the same environmental contest (bioclimate, substratum, soil, slope, altitude) but under diverse management regimes (grazing and mowing) for many decades. The evidenced differentiation between the two pastoral vegetations can be attributed to disturbance type and the statistical functional analysis performed through seven plant traits (prostrate form, early flowering, storage organs, clonal ability, basal meristems, chemical defences and hairs), revealed the distinguishing patterns. Discriminant analysis pointed out typical biological attributes for each disturbance conditions, while from correlation analysis emerged different possible traits combinations which do not follow the previous traits separation. Such outcomes are explainable because both grazing and mowing provoke aboveground phytomass removal, although grazing is a selective pressure, while mowing gives to all the species the same development chances. It is reasonable to conclude that convergent strategies within the two systems are possible and frequent.
