An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of Nile tilapia fed with supplemental feed (25% crude protein) at 50% satiation. Juvenile Nile tilapia (average weight 6.4 g) were stocked in an earthen pond at 2.4 fish m⁻² . The pond was fertilized twice weekly with a mixture of superphosphate and urea fertilizer (68 kg ha 1⁻¹). The annual fish yield was 6880 kg ha⁻¹. The mean weight of harvested fish ranged from 110 to 250 g. The food conversion ratio (FCR) was 0.82, the average daily weight gain (ADG) was 0.9 g d⁻¹ and the specific growth rate was 1.55 % d⁻¹. This study demonstrated that 50% satiation feeding is an effective feeding rate for improving the production of Nile tilapia cultured in a fertilized, freshwater earthen pond.
This paper presents the results of studies on the feeding and growth of Siberian sturgeon in the first year of life in monoculture in earthen ponds. The digestive tracts of the fish contained the following orders of invertebrate fauna: Cladocera, Coleoptera, Copepoda, Diptera, Heteroptera, Mollusca, Oligochaeta and Trichoptera. Diptera and Cladocera dominated. Small amounts of Copepoda, Heteroptera, Mollusca and Trichoptera were also noted. The average indexes of weight contribution reached the highest values (1.09 - 1.70 g) in the spring-summer season, while the value in the fall sample was 1.41 g. The highest values of frequency of occurrence (100%) of the dominant Cladocera and Diptera in the food and of feeding intensity (179 - 275‱) also occurred in the spring-summer season. The highest values of the percentage indexes (> 50% - eudominants) were reported for plankton crustaceans from the order Cladocera in spring and summer. After the spring sturgeon had adapted to the new environmental conditions, a clear increase in the growth rate was observed, and after the water temperature dropped below 13ºC growth stopped.
The biochemical characteristics of tench, Tinea tinea (L.), stocking material were examined with regard to the following parameters prior to and after wintering: bactericidal activity of the blood serum; blood glucose level (BG); total proteins (TP); blood serum protein fractions (albumins, and α-, β-, and γ-globulins). The study was conducted over the course of three years (1996 - 1998) on clinically healthy two-summer-old (fall) and two-year-old (spring) tench that ranged in body weight from 30 to 80 g. The study indicated that one of the parameters that characterized the resistance of tench in the wintering period was the relative stability of the bactericidal activity of the blood serum. Seasonal dynamics in the levels of blood glucose and total serum proteins were determined, and the levels of the former were higher in fall and lower in spring. The specific metabolic nature of different protein fractions in the blood serum of tench was characterized by percentage decreases of albumins and α- and γ-globulins and by increases of β-globulins.
