The study conducted in 2002-2004 analysed the costs of potato cultivation for early harvest under perforated foil and polypropylene fibre covers at diversified duration of covering the plants until 2 and 3 weeks after plant sprouting, under condition of mid-eastern Poland. It was stated that the application of perforated foil increased the direct production cost by 35.3%-46.2%, whereas the polypropylene fibre by 61.3% - 82.3%; however, the tuber yield depended on weather conditions during potato vegetation. High costs of covers’ usage were returned by increased production value. Increased inputs on production by application of the covers were more effective under unfavourable thermal conditions in the first period of potato vegetation. Only in the year of cold spring, at considerably increased yield of the tubers cultivated under covers, the extreme (marginal) costs of production under covers were lower than the average unit costs. An increase of the expenditures on production by usage of perforated foil was more effective. The unit costs of production under polypropylene fibre were 1.3 - 1.6 times higher; in the year favourable to cultivation of early potatoes the costs were almost identical as under perforated foil usage. The extreme costs of production under covers for Aksamitka potato cultivar were lower when the covers were kept over the plants over 3 weeks after sprouting while for Cykada cultivar over 2 weeks.
