The energy balance of rats fed the cafeteria diet, based on twelve food items (CAF diet), the homogenized cafeteria diet (MIX) and the stock diet (CONTR) was examined. Hyperphagia expressed as increase of the digestible energy intake, compared to the rats fed the CONTR diet, was observed only in the animals given the MIX diet. Feeding with the MIX diet, in relation to the CAF diet, led to a significantly greater energy expenditure as well as a decreased net efficiency of the energy utilization. Unexpectedly the group fed stock diet showed the lowest energy efficiency and energy expenditure equal to MIX group.
