This article describes the information contained within World Wide Web of potential uses for molecular biologists. The aim is to provide a basic description of the server provided services of bioinformatics, major program coordinator activities, and current contents of genome nucleic acid and protein databases.
The amount of sand moving parallel to a coastline forms a prerequisite for many harbor design projects. Such information is currently obtained through various empirical formulae. Despite so many works in the past, an accurate and reliable estimation of the rate of sand drift has still remained a problem. It is a non-linear process and can be described by chaotic time-series. The current study addresses this issue through the use of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). ANFIS is about taking an initial fuzzy inference system (FIS) and tuning it with a back propagation algorithm based on the collection of input-output data. ANFIS was developed to predict the sand drift from a variety of causative variables. The structure and algorithm of ANFIS for predicting the rate of sand drift is described. The Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System was validated by confi rming its consistency with a database of specifi ed physical process.
The phytosociological database Polish Vegetation Database collects relevés of all vegetation types in Poland. The database was established in 2007 and is located at Department of Biodiversity and Plant Cover Protection, University of Wrocław (http://synbiot.uni.wroc.pl). On March 2012, the database included 40000 relevés collected between 1927 and 2011. Most of relevés was taken from published papers and represents almost all types of habitats of Poland. Large groups of relevés represent meadows and pastures (Molinio-Arrhnehteretrea), broadleaf forests (Querco-Fagetea), arable land communities (Stellarietea), coniferous forests (Vaccinio-Piceetea) and eutrophic reed communities (Phragmitetea). In comparison to other countries in Central Europe, Polish Vegetation Database currently belongs to medium-sized databases, with full functionality and accessibility. The present article describes its development, basic operational information and how it can be used in analysis of vegetation in Poland.
Allergies and/or food intolerances are a growing problem of the modern world. Diffi culties associated with the correct diagnosis of food allergies result in the need to classify the factors causing allergies and allergens themselves. Therefore, internet databases and other bioinformatic tools play a special role in deepening knowledge of biologically-important compounds. Internet repositories, as a source of information on different chemical compounds, including those related to allergy and intolerance, are increasingly being used by scientists. Bioinformatic methods play a signifi cant role in biological and medical sciences, and their importance in food science is increasing. This study aimed at presenting selected databases and tools of bioinformatic analysis useful in research on food allergies, allergens (11 databases), epitopes (7 databases), and haptens (2 databases). It also presents examples of the application of computer methods in studies related to allergies.
The measuring in field is the most commonly used activity in various industrial branches. To be the results useful the data must be stored in a suitable database. There is a problem: to use either one of most of commercial database systems or to create the special purpose designed database? This question is discussed and an own approach of the database design is presented in this paper. The goal is the designed database with minimum of memory capacity occupied and the most rapidly information provided. It is supposed that the basic database design rules e.g. to avoid redundant data (normalization), ensure that the relationships among attributes are represented or facilitate the checking of updates for violation of database integrity constraints are respected. A special optimization method for common attributes reduction, for storing strings of variable length and for database reorganization is used.
