Analysis of plant communities accompanying root crops on compact soils is presented in the paper. It is the next part of the review of plant communities of agrocenoses of the Podlaski Przełom Bugu (Podlasie Bug Gorge) mesoregion. The studied phytocoenoses were identified on the basis of 103 phytosociological relevés, made according to the Braun-Blanquet method. In the studied agrocenoses, plots of the associations Lamio-Veronicetum politae, Galinsogo-Setarietum and Oxalido-Chenopodietum polyspermi from the Polygono-Chenopodion polyspermi alliance were noted. Small patches of Lamio-Veronicetum and Oxalido-Chenopodietum were rarely noted in the studied area due to a small proportion of suitable habitats. In the area of Podlaski Przełom Bugu mesoregion, phytocoenoses of Oxalido-Chenopodietum developed in the river valleys on fertile muds and black soils. Typical plots of Galinsogo-Setarietum distinguishable by the mass occurrence of Galinsoga parviflora were only observed in the vicinity of farm buildings. Intermediate communities between Panico- Setarion and Polygono-Chenopodion polyspermi as well as phytocoenoces of Echinochloo-Setarietum typicum – subvariant with Veronica persica and Echinochloo-Setarietum fumarietosum – were also quite frequently noted in root crops on compact soils.
The topsoil (1 - 6 cm) water content measured by gravimetric and reflectometric methods (TDR) in fields with different crops (556 pairs of data) were analysed. Mean values of the topsoil water content in the individual fields as measured by means of the TDR method differed from the measurement by the gravimetric method by from 1 to 14 %. Differences in the coefficients of variability were up to 35 %. The correlation coefficient for all the results of the two methods was 0.889 and the mean square error - 2.4 x 10⁻² m³ m⁻³. However, in the case of individual fields the correlation coefficients were lower. It can be gathered from the analyses carried out that the TDR method yielded satisfactory results when the soil water content was higher than 0.17 m³ m⁻³, and the soil bulk density was about 1.35 Mg m⁻³. Spatial distribution of soil water content obtained from the two methods were generally speaking, similar, however significant differences appeared locally as well. In the fields with lower soil bulk density (in average values) and showed higher differentiation, the values of soil water content as measured by the TDR and its spatial differentiation was higher than the one measured by the gravimetric method.
Alopecurus myosuroides seeds were sampled from 32 winter wheat fields from 2010 to 2014. Resistance to herbicides was detected in 17 A. myosuroides populations. In addition to single resistance to herbicides, cross-resistance and multiple resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS)- and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicides were found. Application of sulfometuron and imazapyr was unable to control some of the resistant biotypes in this study. This result implies that resistance in these populations is due to a target site mechanism. The A. myosuroides biotypes resistant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides varied in their responses to derivatives of aryloxy-phenoxy-propionic acid (FOPs), cyclohexanediones (DIMs) and phenylpyrazolines (DENs). Resistant biotypes of A. myosuroides that could not be controlled with fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (FOP) and pinoxaden (DEN) were controlled with clethodim (DIM).
The study was carried out on lowland agricultural lands in western Poland between July and August 2007. The influence of the proximity of forested areas on the occurrence of foliage-dwelling spiders was defined by measuring the abundance of spider webs on five transects situated at distances of 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 metres from the forest edge. Generally, the greatest diversity and the highest total density were observed close to the forest edge, but an opposite relation was found for orb webs, built by spiders from the families Araneidae and Tetragnathidae, whose abundance was the lowest in close proximity to the forest. At a distance of 80 metres from the forest a slight increase in total abundance of webs was recorded, no doubt due to the presence of weeds, in which were recorded numerous occurrences of sheet and irregular webs. On all the transects studied, orb webs predominated on maize shoots, whereas only three-dimensional sheet and irregular webs occurred on weeds. Included in this discussion are some of the potential effects of the proximity of forest areas on foliage-dwelling spider populations in maize fields and on the possibilities for spiders limiting this crop’s pests.
This present paper, focused on root crop communities of light soils, is a part of the wide range characteristics of segetal communities of the Podlaski Przełom Bugu (Podlasie Bug River Gorge) mesoregion. On the basis of 160 phytosociological relevés made according to the Braun-Blanquet method, phytocenoses representing the Panico-Setarion alliance were distinguished. Most often, patches of the association Echinochloo-Setarietum were recorded in the study area. Heterogeneous habitat conditions affect its floristic diversity. Two subassociations of the phytocenosis, divided according to the species composition into 9 lower syntaxa, were identified on light soils. The following subassociations were distinguished: Echinochloo-Setarietum setarietosum glaucae in a typical variant and a variant with Juncus bufonius, both with subvariants with Digitaria ischaemum, as well as a typical variant of Echinochloo-Setarietum typicum, a variant with Juncus bufonius and a subvariant with Oxalis stricta in the typical and wet variant. Another association found in root crops on light soils of the Podlaski Przełom Bugu mesoregion is Digitarietum ischaemi. Its patches were observed in cultivations on light, acidic, poor soils. The characteristic feature of this community is the occurrence of numerous acidophilous species. In habitat conditions typical for the Podlaski Przełom Bugu mesoregion, Digitarietum ischaemi is differentiated into the typical and wet variant. Quite frequent patches of the Setaria pumila-Setaria viridis community were noted in intermediate habitat conditions, between those characteristic for Digitarietum ischaemi and Echinochloo-Setarietum.
The study included the measurement of the concentrations of N-NO₃⁻, N-NH₄⁺and organic nitrogen in the ground water of cultivated fields, and in the water of the subdrain as well as in the water of a small pond. The investigation included different forms of nitrogen in the precipitation and the run-off water. The water of the subdrain was characterized by a relatively richness in nitrates. The highest concentrations of nitrates were measured in the water of the subdrain. However, N-NH₄⁺ dominated in the precipitation water. Moreover, the contents of organic nitrogen were the highest in the water of the run-off. It was observed that 57% of the total amount of nitrogen supplies to the pond remained in a dissolved form. In general, the small pond showed a high decrease in different forms of nitrogen and showed a high degree of biological transformation. Evidently, the small pond of the agricultural landscape functions as a very efficient biogeochemical barrier.
