In 2010-2012, a pot experiment was conducted in order to assess the impact of a sowing method and density of spring wheat and Persian clover on their uptake and content of nitrogen in different parts of the plants. The plants were grown in the following variants: a mixture, pure sowing, higher density (recommended in agricultural practice) and density reduced by 20%. Observations were performed in the following wheat development growth stages (BBCH): leaf development (12-14), tillering (21-23), stem elongation (31-32), inflorescence emergence (54-56) and ripening (87-89). The experiment included determinations of dry matter in different parts of plants (aerial organs, roots) and of the nitrogen content in dry matter. Based on the results, the total nitrogen content was determined in both species. The data were also used to calculate nitrogen translocation from the wheat vegetative mass to grain, and to calculate selected competition indicators. It was demonstrated that - regardless of the density of plants - the nitrogen uptake by spring wheat and Persian clover in the mixed sowing was lower than in the pure sowing treatment. Mixed sowing caused a more limited nitrogen uptake by the aerial parts of both species than by their roots. No impact was demonstrated of the plant density on the nitrogen uptake by different parts of spring wheat. Persian clover in pots with the lower sowing density absorbed less nitrogen than in pots with the recommended density. Nitrogen translocation from the vegetative parts to the grain of spring wheat between the inflorescence emergence and ripening stages was more effective in the mixture than in the pure sown plants. In mixed sowing, after nitrogen uptake, wheat proved to be a stronger competitor than Persian clover during the whole plant growing period.
In the era of sustainable agriculture, is looking for new unconventional methods to control weed infestation. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of cover crop biomass and the manner and time of mixing it with the soil on primary weed infestation of carrot compared with the conventional plough cultivation without the use of cover crops. The cover crop plants modified the state and reduced the degree of primary weed infestation of carrot compared to cultivation without cover crops. White mustard was the most effective in reducing primary weed infestation of carrot in all variants of tillage. Phacelia, buckwheat and oat cover crops also limited largely the number of weeds in carrot. The largest number of weeds was recorded in no-cover crop cultivation in no-tillage objects and those cultivated using subsoiler before winter, and cultivating in spring with aggregate. The largest reduction of primary weed infestation compared to conventional tillage was achieved in cultivation on ridges, with white mustard, phacelia or oats cover crops and weakest after vetch cover crop. In no-ploughing flat tillage system, lack of cover crop significantly increased the degree of weed infestation compared to conventional tillage, while the use of cover crops contributed to the reduction of primary weed infestation of carrot compared to cultivation without cover crops.
In the first two years of study, method of cultivation did not affect the emergence of cucumber seedlings. In the third year, a drought occurring during the spring was the cause of poor seedling emergence on no-tilled plots. Six weeks after seed sowing, the shoots of cucumbers grown on the no-tilled plots were much shorter, especially in the last study year. At the time of cucumber seed sowing, no-tilled soil contained less phosphorus and potassium and in the middle of the fructification period the content of these elements in cucumber leaves was higher under no-tillage cultivation. Additional spring fertilization of rye with ammonium nitrate resulted in a higher N-NO3 content in soil and later in a higher nitrogen content of cucumber leaves. The content of calcium and magnesium in soil and than in cucumber leaves was independent of the cultivation method. In the first two years, method of cultivation did not affect the yield of cucumber fruits and in the third year the yield was much lower under no-tillage because of poor seedling emergence. Moreover, in the third year the fruits were smaller and dry matter content of the fruit was significantly higer under no-tillage cultivation.
The purpose of the studies was to determine the occurrence of soilborne fungi pathogenic towards onion cultivated after spring rye and common vetch. The objects of the studies were the seedlings of onion ‘Wolska’ cv and the isolates of the following fungi: Fusarium culmorum, F. oxysporum, F. solani, Penicillium verrucosum var. cyclopium, P. verrucosum var. verrucosum and Pythium irregulare. As a result of the growth chamber studies it turned out that the fungi used in the experiment were pathogenic towards onion. The harmfulness of the studied fungi varied both between the species and between the isolates within the species. P. verrucosum var cyclopium and F. culmorum proved to be the most harmful since the smallest number of onion plants grew in those experimental combinations and they were the least infected. The most onion plants with the smallest proportion of the infected ones were found in the combination with F. oxysporum.
The study examined the importance of winter catch crops (intercrops) to wintering birds in a low-intensity farming area of Poland. Birds were counted on two occasions between November 2009 and January 2010 in 514 research plots in two different parts of the country. During the two counts 28 species were recorded. Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra, Tree Sparrow Passer montanus and Shorelark Eremophila alpestris were the most numerous species. The statistical analysis (GLZ) of the influence of survey, location and habitat types on the occurrence of birds in the farmland did not reflect the significant effect on any variables. Significant differences in densities of birds between the habitats analysed (GLM) were noted. The stubbles supported a relatively greater density of birds than the mustard winter catch crop and ploughed fields. Increasing the area of winter catch crops at the expense of ploughed fields may favour birds, but when winter crops are sown in fields that would otherwise be left as stubble, wintering conditions for birds deteriorate, especially for buntings.
Scorzonera hispanica is a rich source of inulin – a glycoside which has a positive effect on human and animal organisms. The paper presents studies on fungi threatening the cultivation of scorzonera. Soil mulching with intercrop cover crops such as oats, tansy phacelia and spring vetch had a positive effect on the population and healthiness of the seedlings and the roots of the studied plant. The following fungi were most frequently isolated from the infected underground organs of scorzonera: Alternaria alternata, A. scorzonerae, Botrytis cinerea, Cylindrocarpon didymum, Fusarium culmorum, F. oxysporum, F. solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora sp. and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Among the applied mulching plants, oats proved to be the most effective in inhibiting the occurrence of the enumerated fungi species.
No-tillage cultivation using cover crops is an important part of sustainable horticulture, however there are only few date on this subject related to ‘Hamburg’ parsley. In two years` field experiment no-tillage cultivation using white mustard as a cover crop did not affect germination of ‘Hamburg’ parsley cv. Alba but further growth of no-tilled plants was slower. Yield of no-tilled plants with leaves was lower and the share of leaves in this yield was higher. Roots of no-tilled parsley were shorter and of lower weight, their yield was also lower but their health status was better. No-tillage did not have a negative effect on content of total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in parsley leaves. No-tilled roots contained dry matter, total sugars and essential oils more and the content of L-ascorbic acid and of monosaccharides did not depend on cultivation method. No-tilled soil covered with mustard mulch was more moist, less porous and of higher bulk density. Mustard mulch controlled annual weeds in interrows well but it did not control weeds germinating in rows where parsley was seeded. Control of wintering and winter hard weeds was dependent on biomass produced by mustard plants.
The study determined the antagonistic effect of microorganisms of the soil environment of salsify towards the following pathogenic fungi: A. alternata, F. culmorum, F. oxysporum, R. solani and S. sclerotiorum. The field experiment considered mulching the soil with such cover crops as oats, phacelia and common vetch. Laboratory tests pointed to oats as the plant which has the best influence on the quantity of antagonistic Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas spp., Gliocladium spp., Penicillium spp. and Trichoderma spp. These microorganisms reduced the growth of A. alternata and F. culmorum in the most effective way. Antagonistic fungi inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum, R. solani and S. sclerotiorum in a greater degree than antagonistic bacteria. Mulching the soil with cover crops can reduce the growth and development of soil-borne fungi pathogenic to salsify.
