The study was based on the conclusions about sustainable development and the spatial integration of the regions from the National Development Strategy 2020. The document was adopted at the end of 2012. The assessment of trends in the level of socio-economic development of rural and semi-urban areas in Lower Silesia was a basis to check if the convergence or divergence of the region appeared. The aim of the research is to determine whether the processes of reducing or increasing diversity of socio-economic development of rural and semi-urban areas occurred in Lower Silesia. To determine the level of socio-economic development of the communes Hellwig’s measure was used [1968]. The data source was Local Data Bank of Main Statistical Office. The results of the analysis allow to assume that in spite of new tools and instruments of local development, aimed at spatial convergence, between 2002 and 2010 there has been no convergence of rural and semi-urban areas in Lower Silesia.
This article is designed to explore the convergence of popular culture and politics during the presidential election campaign of 2008. The article shall commence with the clarification of the meaning of the concepts of popular culture and celebrity, and will continue with a short overview of the existing theoretical framework dealing with different approaches to fame and celebrity culture. The analytical part of the article will be devoted to the examination of the narrative structure of the celebrity persona of Barack Obama created by media during the last presidential campaign. The analysis shall be based on a wide range of popular culture texts: newspaper articles, campaign memos, interviews, advertisements and TV reports. The aim of this article is to show how the saturation coverage of celebrity changes political discourse, and how the concept of fame used in the campaign facilitates the reading of celebrity as a derogatory force which downgrades serious politics.
Subject and purpose of work: The aim of the study is to assess the regional differentiation of the average level of farm income and to answer the question of whether during 2006-2014 there was a tendency towards convergence in this area. Materials and methods: The spatial scope of research included four FADN agricultural regions, whereas the time span covered the years 2006-2014. The numerical data used for the analyses were sourced from standard FADN results. The assessment of convergence was carried out using the coefficient of variation (sigma convergence) and the relative index of changes in the regions compared to the country (beta convergence). Results: The conducted research indicates the existence of regional disproportions in terms of average income level and average labour profitability on farms. The highest average income was achieved throughout all the years covered by research in the region of Pomerania and Masuria, and the lowest one in Lesser Poland and Carpathian Foothills. The research demonstrates that during 2006-2014 there was no convergence in the average level of income and average labour profitability of farms in the FADN regions. Conclusions: Convergence is a long-term process, so the research should be treated as an initial examination of the regional differentiation of the income situation of farms.
This paper analyses the competitive advantages and strategies of fruit and vegetable producers. The convergence of domestic and international markets and equalization of competitive conditions reduce the competitive potential of Polish fruit and vegetable producers and force them to make qualitative and innovative improvements. Quantitative and qualitative research was undertaken to prove this thesis statement. Research was carried out as an attempt to identify the variables that determine companies’ ability to achieve competitive advantage. It aimed at recognizing pursued competitive strategies that had been adjusted to new circumstances. The results of qualitative research are presented in the paper. Interdependence of entrepreneurs’ opinions for both domestic and foreign markets was examined by means of ordinal correlation measures. The authoress applied triangulation of methods, i.e. a combination of a quantitative analysis of official statistics and her own qualitative studies.
