Up till now, no critical contents have been elaborated which permit to evaluate the correct microelement nutrition on the basis of chrysanthemum stock plant leaves analysis. Experiments were carried out to determine the content of iron, zinc and copper in the leaves of chrysanthemum motherplants by studying 16 cultivars in 2000 and 13 cultivars in 2001. Analyses were carried out at 4 terms (from: February to May). The values characterizing the content of the particular components in the leaves of each cultivar of chrysanthemum were statistically elaborated. Standard deviation for the cultivars and variation coefficient for the whole population in the given year were calculated. The usability of guide values utilized for traditional methods of chrysanthemum growing in diagnostics of plant nutrition were critically evaluated. New standard ranges of the content of iron, zinc and copper in chrysanthemum motherplant leaves were elaborated.
Potted chrysanthemum is one of the most important floriculture plants which commercially produced in greenhouses where silicon (Si) is available in limited concentration because of using several substrates as growing media. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the supplemental effects of Si nutrition on growth, flowering, flower longevity as well as shelf life and nutrients content of potted chrysanthemum in relation to Si application. Moreover, the effects of Si treatment on some physiological parameters i.e. chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, membrane stability index (MSI) and total carbohydrates were also investigated. Si application as K₂SiO₃ was added whether as foliar application at 25, 75 and 125 mg L⁻¹ Si or soil drenches at 50, 100 and 150 mg L⁻¹ Si. Except plant height and leaf area, the other vegetative growth and flowering characters were improved as a result of both Si supplementation methods compared with untreated control. Flowering was earlier and shelf life was longer in Si-supplemented than nonsupplemented plants. Generally, Si application increased the macro and micronutrients concentrations (except Ca) estimated in this study. Chlorophyll content, stomatal resistance, MSI and total carbohydrates were increased among Si treated plants. Improving the floricultural traits, extending longevity and shelf life of greenhouse grown chrysanthemum may give an impact of its greenhouse commercial production if appropriate level was used.
Many chrysanthemum mutants are chimeras built from tissues of a varied genetic composition. Regeneration in vitro of somatic embryos from the whole mutated ligulate florets or only from their small mutated fragments can lead to the separation of chimera components and, as a result, producing a new original cultivar. There was determined the effect of growth regulators (2,4-D; KIN or BAP) and explant type (whole or transversely-cut-into-half ligulate florets) on the efficiency of somatic embryogenesis of Chrysanthemum × grandiflorum (Ramat.) Kitam. ‘Cool Time’. For the induction of the somatic embryogenesis ant the regeneration of somatic embryos the MS medium [Murashige and Skoog 1962] with 18.08 μM 2,4-D as well as with this auxin and 4.44; 8.88; 22.20 μM BAP or 4.65; 9.30; 23.25 μM KIN was used. The best results were obtained when transversely-cut-into-half ligulate florets were inoculated onto the medium with 4.65 μM KIN and 18.08 μM 2,4-D. This results may increase the probability of success in separation of chimera components in chrysanthemum breeding.
Studies were carried out in the years 2003–2004 in a greenhouse. Three nutrient solutions with differing contents of nitrogen and potassium for chrysanthemum fertigation were used. Influence of used fertilization on growth and development of plants data was very limited. No effect of the studied nutrient solutions on plant flowering term was found. For the fertigation of chrysanthemums from Time group grown from April till October in peat substrate nutrient solution containing 150–180 mg N-NO₃·dm⁻³ ·and 210–252 mg K·dm⁻³·is recommended.
Samples of whiteflies were collected from Dendranthema spp. in major growing areas of Tanzania. The insects were transferred onto test plants to confirm host specificity. Infested with insects, test plants were then protected with polyethylene bags. Samples of whiteflies from infested plants were taken at 10 day intervals post-infestation (dpi), 28 dpi and 35 dpi, for behavioural studies. At 10 dpi eggs were seen as oval bodies while at 28 dpi crawling bodies and newly emerged adults were observed, leaving behind characteristic shiny hollow cases. At 35 dpi, all the stages of development were seen. The features observed are typical of Bemisia argentifolii and the area is endangered by the occurrence and spread of viruses transmitted by this species. This identification, which is an integral part of pest surveillance, initiates a study of the viruses and will lead to pest records for regulatory purposes. The international scientific and trading community is assured that the report reflects the real situation. The pest is thought to be present in the reported areas only and the pest status is actionable and under surveillance.
The content of total iron, cuprum and boron in leaves of four chrysanthemum cultivars was studied in 12 growth cycles starting on the second day of each month throughout the year, from January to December. From the moment of potting, the plants were treated with a short day. In periods of naturally long days, the day was shortened to 10.5 hours using a black-out cover. No supplementary light was used. The time of culture associated with real insolation had a significant influence on micronutrients content. Maximum contents of cuprum and boron were recorded in the leaves of chrysanthemums grown in periods of light deficit. The reverse regularity in case of iron was observed.
