Human action is now altering the global environment on an unprecedented scale and thus contributes to environmental change eventually affecting human health. The range of potential environment-related health problems is very wide. This work is an attempt to analyze the exposure of the population to environmental factors and of the health significance of this exposure. As the subject is very broad we have focused on the following categories of factors: Climate Change and Ozone Depletion Discusses the causes of the enhanced greenhouse effect caused by a rise in C02 levels in the atmosphere and its threats to the environment and human health; also presents the strategies being used to limit the effects. Population Growth, Human Development and Urban Stress Deals with the problems concerning population growth, especially in developing countries, and differences in living standards; and also environmental stress in urban areas. Chemical Risk and Technological Hazards Reviews the effects of excessive chemical loading and the methods of reducing the danger to a level where only negligible effects occur to the population and environment. Technology - Related Accidents Analyzes the problems caused by accidents and the attention given to trying to set acceptable risk levels for both human health and the environment. Waste Production and Management Discusess present trends in waste production and current waste management practices as well as the options to reduce waste. Within each caregory we tried to present the dimension of the problem and evaluate its risk for human health as well as specify the main challenges and goals. These main challenges are also the opportunities and on this basis every chapter also includes the assessement of the present progress and identifies the hopes and strategies for future development.
