Studies on seed storage were conducted at seed processing and storage section of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan Nigeria in 2007 and 2008, to evaluate High protein maize (HPM) seed for resistance/tolerance to storage insect pest, and assess the resultant effect of seed treatment chemicals on its germination potential. Seeds of HPM variety (ART-98-SW1) and Quality protein maize (QPM) variety (ILE-1-OB) and two varieties of field corn (SUWAN-1-SR and TZPB-SRW) were treated with chemicals, namely Fitscophos™, Actellic 25 EC™, Apron Star™ and combination of Actellic 25 EC and Fitscophos before storing them under controlled environment for six months. The results show that HPM, QPM and field corn require storage chemicals for effective storage, but both QPM and HPM varieties were significantly damaged by storage insect pests compared to field corn varieties regardless of the chemical used. Apron Star effectively reduced infestation by insect pests, but it may bring about significant reduction in seed viability if used for long term storage. Combination of Actellic 25 EC and Fitscophos successfully reduced infestation by insect pests without significant injurious effect on seed viability. Breeding programmes for resistance to storage pests is recommended while long term effects of Apron Star on seed viability needs to be investigated before recommending it for use in HPM/QPM maize varieties.
The studies were carried out in Wielkopolska region (western Poland) in oat and winter rye cultures. Density and species structure of Thysanoptera were studied. Average density of adult Thysanoptera on oat reached 371.4 individuals/m2, and was higher than on rye, where it reached 107.5 individuals/m2. Limothrips cerealium Haliday was a dominant species on oat as well as on winter rye.
Subject and purpose of work: The main purpose of the article is to research the state of grainproduct subcomplex of the agro-industrial complex and identify the main trends in its functioning as a prerequisite for the implementation of the external economic potential of Ukraine. Materials and methods: The research used methodical tools for analysis, construction of econometric models, as well as open information sources of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Results: A set of factors (independent variables) were determined and the existence of theoretically their relationship with the production profitability of cereals and legumes (dependent variable) was substantiated. The regression equations for the investigated factors dependence were formed. The reliability of the econometric model was proved using Fisher's criterion and Student's t-criterion test. Conclusions: To increase the external economic potential of the grain-product subcomplex of the agroindustrial complex, it is advisable to focus on building rational mechanisms for managing the identified determinants of efficiency ensuring of the latter.
Many species of leaf mining flies feed on cereal crops. Cereal crop plantations with high level of the pest infestation need to be treated with insecticides. The yellow tables covered with glue were used for trapping the pests. The leaf mining flies warning system can provide the information about date of treatment based on counting the trapped imagines of the pest and observation of leaf beetle appearance and its development. The following species of leaf mining flies are the most common in Poland: Phytomyza nigra Mg., Agromyza ambigua Fll., Ceroclontha pygmaea Mg., Agromyza mobilis Mg.
The paper demonstrates the results of research on the mobility of phosphorus and sulphur in winter wheat fertilized with several rates (0, 20, 40, 60, 80 t ha-1) of farmyard manure and nitrogen (0, 40, 80, 120 kg N ha-1). The content of these nutrients was related to the activity of acid phosphatase and arylsulphatase in a Haplic Luvisol. The highest content of available phosphorus (91.58 mg P kg-1) was reported in the soil amended with farmyard manure at the rate of 60 t ha-1. The content of sulphates (VI) in the Haplic Luvisol was high and, on average, equal to 25.22 mg kg-1. The activity of acid phosphatase in the soil increased with increasing mineral nitrogen rates. The highest content of sulphates (VI) and the lowest activity of arylsulphatase were identified at the nitrogen rate of 40 kg N ha-1. The mobility of phosphorus in winter wheat was the highest when farmyard manure at the rate of 60 t ha-1 and mineral nitrogen at the rate of 120 kg N ha-1 were incorporated into the soil. The greatest translocation of sulphur was reported at the high farmyard manure rates (40, 60 and 80 t ha-1) and the nitrogen rate of 80 kg N ha-1.
Environmental hazards posed by unintentional and excessive penetration of chemical substances into water, air and soil is noticeable in its harmful effects on plants, free range animals, quality of environment components and biodiversity in general. The chemicals used in agricultural practices enter the food chain most frequently through their application to soil or crops. Regarding the employment of pest-control preparations, rodenticides play an important role in controlling harmful rodents. The present paper reports the investigation of residues fromKumatox Z rodenticide preparation with an active ingredient – warfarin – applied to cereal crops. Kumatox Z is a rodenticide bait containing the active ingredient warfarin in 0.05% concentration. The preparation was employed in the form of cereal baits to soil surface. The research results showed the presence of warfarin residues in the treated soil and cereals grown over there. Determination of residues was carried out by HPLC; interestingly, they were found in the soil even after three years.
Wheat dwarf virus (WDV) has been one of the most common viruses on cereal crops in Poland in the last years. This single stranded DNA virus is transmitted by the leafhopper spec, Psammotettix alienus (Dahlb.) in a persistent manner. It induces yellowing and streaking of leaves, dwarfing or even death of infected plants. The presence of barley- and wheat-specific forms of WDV (WDV-B and WDV-W) and their vector were previously reported in the country, however the literature data did not include any information on the infectivity of the vector in Poland. A duplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) procedure was developed and optimized for simultaneous detection and differentiation of both forms in the vector. Two sets of primers amplify 734 bp and 483 bp specific fragments for WDV-W and WDV-B, respectively. The results were verified by a sequencing method. The studies were carried out on insect samples collected in autumn from four different locations in Greater Poland. The results confirmed the presence of WDV-W in the tested samples. They also suggested the concomitant of both forms of the virus in the vector. Additional studies to determine virus-vector relationships should be undertaken.
The characteristics of communities developing in cereal crops of the Mazowiecki Landscape Park are presented in the paper. The traditional methods of cultivation, a mosaic of fields, meadows and forests as well as a specific microclimate affect the occurrence of species-rich, syntaxonomically differentiated agrophytocenoses. The occurrence of 4 associations and 2 communities in the area of the Park was noted. On the poorest soils, the association Arnoserido-Scleranthetum was the most widespread and internally differentiated, whereas in more fertile habitats the association Vicietum tetraspermae was the commonest. The above mentioned associations were noted more frequently in winter crops than in spring cereals. Plots of the association Papaveretum argemones and intermediate communities, between Arnoserido- Scleranthetum and Papaveretum argemones, were seldom observed in the studied area. Plots with domination of species diagnostic for the order Polygono-Chenopodietalia occurred rarely in spring cereals, mainly in the protection zone of the Landscape Park. Single, impoverished plots of Aphano-Matricarietum were recorded in the south-eastern part of the Park.
This paper presents the results of a study on the tolerance of proso millet to herbicides (2,4-D + fluroxypyr; tribenuron-methyl + fluroxypyr; MCPA – 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid; dicamba + triasulfuron) foliar-applied at the tillering stage of proso millet, at the maximum rate (100%) and at a rate reduced by 50%. Plots without herbicide application were the control treatment. The experiment was carried out on a loess-derived soil (soil class II) under the climatic conditions of the central Lublin region, Poland. The study proved that herbicide application in millet crops was justified, because the herbicides (in particular 2,4-D + fluroxypyr and tribenuron-methyl + fluroxypyr) contributed to a statistically significant improvement in the grain chemical composition (especially to an increased content of essential amino acids, fat, selenium, and o-dihydroxy phenols). Moreover, no residues of active substances of the herbicides were found in the millet grain samples analysed. The herbicide rate reduced by 50% proved to be sufficient to ensure appropriate quality of millet grain.
The paper presents results of studies conducted in 1995-1997 on the occurrence of diseases of winter wheat and spring barley depending on the system of farming (extensive, ecological, integrated) and on the influence of disease infection upon seed quality and Fusarium toxins content.
