Growth and development of bull calves in two rearing stations in the middle Pomerania region was observed for over 13 years. Influence of such factors as year, season of birth, place of origin, breeding class, on the value of performance traits was studied. Essential influence of all above factors on the examined features has been proved.
Genetic parameters were estimated for the body weights, daily gains and body measurements of young bulls at central rearing stations. The data included 5512 black-and-white bulls and 1186 Holstein-Friesian (HF) and 1/2 HF bulls bom during 1981 - 1984 and 3959 black-and-white, 2098 HF and 1/2 HF bom during 1985 - 1987. The values of genetic parameters estimated in both periods were similar. Heritabilities of body weights at 120 and 360 days and average daily gains were between 0,21 to 0,29; estimates of heritabilities for heart girth and height at withers were slightly higher. The highest genetic correlations were found between body weight at 360 days and average daily gain. For bulls bom between 1981 and 1984 the BLUP method was used to evaluate predicted differences (1/2 of breeding value) in body weight at 360 days and average daily gains of young bulls. Averages of predicted differences calculated for each rearing station yielded small genetic differences among them. In addition, the predicted differences were evaluated for bulls’ sires based on their sons performances.
To examine the infuencęs of environmental factors on the performance of 13 734 young bulls (Black-and-White, HF and 1/2 HF) bom between 1981 - 1987 and tested at central rearing stations, the fixed effects of station, month and year of birth were included in the linear model. The F-tests showed highly significant effects of stations on all traits, Le., body weights at 120 and 360 days, heart girth and height at withers. Differences among years and months were not always significant Estimates of least squares constants showed seasonal differences: young bulls bom in the second half of a year usually performed better than those bom during winter or early spring.
The respective investigations were carried out in the central rearing station of bulls at Mrozowo on 92 animals aging 1-12 months. Every month blood samples were taken from bulls and the level of hemoglobin, erythrocytes, leucocytes, hematocrit, total protein and its fractions, urea, α-amine nitrogen, AspAT, ALAT, AP, glucose, cholesterol and bilirubin was determined. The results were subjected to the statistical analysis. It has been found that along with the growth of bulls increased in the blood serum the total protein level due to an increase of γ-globulin fractions. The activity increased since the age of 5 months and then it gradually decreased. The cholesterol level increased since the age of 4 months. Among the blood indices investigated the stablest values in subsequent month of life of the bulls showed erythrocytes, hematocrit and albumins.
Effect of genotype, station and year of birth was studied on the population of 5408 yearling bulls bom in the period 1972 - 1987 and reared in 4 performance testing stations. Selection intensity of bulls and selection differentials in respect to body weight, height at withers and.heart girth varied between stations. In the period 1983 - 1987 selection parameters were slightly lower when compared with the period 1972 - 1981 Great preferences in selection were given to the crossbred bulls. In Polish black-and-white x HF and Polish black-and-white x British Friesian crosses selection parameters were lower than in pure Polish black-and-white bulls.
Data were 13734 black-and-white, Holstein-Friesian (HF) and 1/2 HF young bulls bom during 1981 - 1987, and performance tested at the central rearing stations. General characteristics of the population were given separately for two periods: 1981 - 1984 and 1985 - 1987. A large number of young bulls were single sons of several hundreds of sites, and about 30% of the young bulls were sons of sires with about 100 bulls on test HF and 1/2 HF were superior to the black-and-white strain in all traits studied, i.e. body weights at 120 and 360 days, heart girth and height at withers. Means for those traits in both periods did not differ, suggesting a lack of phenotypic progress. Coefficients of relationship and inbreeding were very low in both periods.
