The catch per unit effort (c.p.u.e.) estimated as kg/hr and the yield per recruitment (Y/R) often common by-catch fishes are used in the present paper to investigate the effects of shrimp trawlers on the fisheries status and its environment in the Northwest Arabian Gulf. Samples were collected on weekly basis through fishery-oceanography survey carried out by the Marine Science Centre at the University of Basrah during the period of 1995-1999, using two small shrimp trawlers. The catch per unit effort (c.p.u.e.) of total, commercial fishes, shrimps, and other invertebrates catches showed a drastic drop year by year. The results of the relative yield per recruitment (Y′/R) of the ten investigated species, their optimum and current lengths at first capture (Lc) and their lengths at first maturation (Lm) indicate that the stock of these species suffered a problem of recruitment overfishing. A strategy of protection for Northwest Arabian Gulf fisheries involves implementing closed season, introducing an effort limitation policy should be designed.
The present work constitutes an attempt of assessment of the expansion of the round goby, Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1811 in the waters of the southern Baltic Sea. It is based on frequency analysis of this species in the survey catches conducted within 1993-1999 by R/V Baltica of the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia, Poland. Since 1996 the round goby has become noticeable in the catches carried out in the Gulf of Puck. A constant increase of the catches of this species has been recorded in catches conducted outside the Gulf of Puck on the fishing grounds: Bromka, Wisłoujście, and Krynica Morska.
Data from a forty year period on catches and stocking from 25 selected lakes located in the Mrągowski Lake District were analyzed. The results of the analyses of catches and stocking indicate that, as a whole, the studied lakes underwent significant eutrophication and their environmental state declined during the studied period. These changes were manifested by changes in the quality of table fish catches and decreases in fishery effectiveness. The study results also indicated that positive changes occurred in the fishery of these lakes following the ownership transformation of the former State Fisheries Enterprises.
The aim of the work was to characterize the species composition of the fish assemblages in the littoral zone and to analyze catch statistics from the lobelia-lake Lake Dołgie Wielkie. Catches were conducted with a fry trawl between May and August 2001 in the shallow littoral. Commercial catches from 1952 to 1970 and 1980 to 1999 were also analyzed. Nine fish species were caught and the majority (81.1%) of specimens belonged to the juvenile stages. The greatest contribution (%) to the littoral fish assemblage was made by belica, which was also described by the highest availability coefficient. A small number of species which comprised the lake fish assemblage and the distribution of their frequency of occurrence meant that the Simpson coefficient (D) of species diversity was low at 0.2082. The littoral of Lake Dołgie Wielkie is not very diverse and the ichthyofauna diversity in it is dominated by belica. In comparison with lobelia-lakes in western Pomerania, the structure of the share of various species in commercial catches was different in Lake Dołgie Wielkie, and the fisheries yield was higher. The fish assemblage which inhabits the lake is characteristic of eutrophic lakes.
