Calving course of 100 cows of Limousine breed covered by bulls of the same breed as well as 100 cows of Polish Holstein-Friesian breed inseminated with Limousine bull's semen was investigated. In purebred population the material was taken from the beef cattle recording scheme provided by the Polish Association of Beef Cattle Breeders and Producers. In case of commercial crossing the material was taken from the questionnaires collected by the technicians representing Mazovian Centre of Animal Breeding and Reproduction in Łowicz. The data base covered calving course degree and calf body weight at birth degree. It was proved, that the significantly higher ratio of deliveries when human help was needed was stated in the purebred Limousine population (14%), in comparison to crossbreeding where the above mentioned ratio was only 7%. The most difficult calvings were observed for the calves of the highest birth weight. The high ratio of assisted calvings in commercial crossing as well as in purebred population of Limousines suggest that all of the deliveries should be monitored by the breeders. It should be also stated that the ratio of difficult calvings in the commercial crossing is significantly lower than that observed in purebred PHF population. Because of so low ratio of assisted calvings in commercial crossing with Limousine bulls it should be recommended to use the semen of bulls which pedigree show high body weight at birth and muscularity.
Out of 5970 calvings, 4.29% had an abnormal course (dystocia). The occurrence of stillbirths was 6.98% of all births and 4.15% of normal course births. Stillbirths occurred in 70.31% of dystocias. The highest frequency of stillbirths was in Blonde d´Aquitaine (8.59%) and the lowest in Gasconne (3.96%) cows. A narrow pelvis and an oversized foetus were the causes of more than 50% cases of dystocia. In Charolaise, an extremely high occurrence of oversized foetus, while in Blonde d´Aquitaine uterine inertia were found. A narrow pelvis was especially frequent as the cause of dystocia in the Aberdeen Angus and Limousine breeds. On analysis of stillbirths the most important effect was of the calving course with 24.47% impact on variability. Difficult calving increased the odds of stillbirth by 76 compared to normal calving. The heritability of stillbirth was estimated as 7.80%. It is recommended to restrict the use of sires with a higher incidence of dystocia or stillbirth in the offspring. As genetically determined variability is very low, other systematic measures are necessary to control stillbirth and dystocia. These are: supervision of the herd, obstetrical assistance, appropriate heifer rearing, mating cows at the proper live weight and proper nutrition during the pregnancy.
The aim of the study was to analyse the relationship between three leptin gene polymorphisms, and indices of reproductive performance – age at first calving, days open, calving interval, number of inseminations per conception, and gestation length in Jersey cattle. A total of 219 cows were tested for the R4C, A59V and C(-963)T mutations using the PCR-RFLP technique. The following allele frequencies were found: R4C – 0.80 (C) and 0.20 (T), A59V – 0.67 (C) and 0.33 (T), C(-963)T – 0.83 (C) and 0.17 (T). The statistically significant correlation (P ≤ 0.05) was found only for the A59V mutation. Cows with the TT genotype were characterized by shorter calving interval and time of days open than animals with CT and CC genotype. Also, the number of inseminations per conception was lower in A59V – TT homozygotes compared with two other genotypes. The association analysis did not reveal any significant correlations for both R4C and C(-963)T polymorphisms.
Energy metabolism in cows during the first three weeks after calving has a decisive effect on the incidence of the first estrus postpartum, the length of the voluntary waiting period and interpregnancy period. Additionally, the negative energy balance (NEB) is usually promoted by the relatively one-sided selection of cows towards high production - accepting the occurrence of NEB after calving as well as excessive body condition of cows before calving. In case of a rapid body condition loss in cows after calving, connected with fat mobilization, characteristic of cows in excessive body condition during drying off, ovarian follicles are not properly formed. Disorders of the ovulation process as well as a lower secretion of progesterone are more frequently recorded in those cows. As a result of an energy deficit at the beginning of lactation, the frequency of GnRH pulses from the hypothalamus is lower in high-producing cows. A lack of pulsation secretion of LH as an effect of the prolonged lack of adaptation of a sufficient amount of energy to the needs of the female was found both in beef and dairy cows. The recurrence of LH pulses, stimulating the onset of ovarian activity and the pre-ovulatory development of ovarian follicles, is crucail to the return of cyclical activity in the postpartum period in cows suffering from NEB. An energy deficit causes the incidence of a dysfunction of the reproductive system in the form of persistent ovarian failure, a delayed onset of normal ovarian activity, and the appearance of the first corpus luteum postpartum. The number of estrus cycles occurring before effective insemination is also reduced and both the voluntary waiting period and interpregnancy period are longer. An energy deficit in the postpartum period results in disorders in the functioning of the endometrium. Disturbed energy-consuming processes of endometrium remodeling lead to delays in uterine involution. Reduced uterine contractility and changes in its environment constitute causes for the retention of the placenta and postpartum metritis; in cows with NEB it was a reduced mitogen response of lymphocytes to cytohaema gglutinin. Moreover, a reduced phagocytic activity of macrophages was found in the milk of cows, in which high contents of ketone compounds were found in their plasma. Similarly, the activity of lymphocytes and neutrophiles was reduced in the environment with an addition of β-hydroxybutyric and acetoacetic acids, as well as elevated PUFA levels and a reduced blood leptin concentration.
Data on insemination and reinsemination were collected from 1 643 Black and White (BW) cows with varied share of Holstein–Friesian (HF) genes, which belonged to the active population managed in five large–scale production farms in the Kujawsko–Pomorskie Province, Poland. A total number of 351 repeated inseminations were recorded, which amounted to 7.71% of all inseminations. The rates of non–return to oestrus after reinseminations were by 2.05% better in relation to single inseminations, however, an economical analysis led to a conclusion that double insemination does not produce economical benefits and can only be recommended in specific cases, e.g. with prolonged oestrus. Highly significant effect on non–return rates after inseminating once or twice was demonstrated for the factors of HF genes share, farm, milk yield, age at first calving, subsequent calving, and season of insemination.
Badania przeprowadzono w stadzie, w którym średnioroczny stan krów w 2008 roku wynosił 185 osobników, a przeciętna roczna wydajność 8009 kg mleka.
