For centuries, in pursuit of the perfect weapon, man has made use of all possible means of destroying the enemy, including fire, poisoned water and bullets; but only the technological developments of the 19th and 20th centuries created the conditions for the use of warfare chemical and incendiary agents. In the Second World War, the application of chemical herbicides for military purposes was planned, but they were put to use practically in the middle of the century in the Malay Peninsula and on a large scale during the Vietnam war. The author calls attention to new kinds of weapons of mass destruction: environmental, meteorological and geophysical.
