We quantified changes in body mass, forearm length, and the total length of the epiphyseal gap of the fourth metacarpal-phalangeal joint of the ashy leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros cineraceus) based on mark-recapture data obtained in Fangkong Cave in Hekou, Yunnan Province, China. We used these data to develop empirical growth curves, to derive growth rates, to establish age-predictive equations, and to compare growth parameters based on three nonlinear growth models. Forearm length and body mass of pups followed a linear pattern of growth until day 17, with mean growth rates of 0.81 mm/day and 0.09 g/day, respectively and thereafter their growth rates increased more slowly. The length of the epiphyseal gap initially increased linearly up to day 13 and then decreased linearly at a mean rate of 0.07 mm/day until day 37. An equation for estimating age based on forearm length was valid when this dimension was ≤ 27.6 mm, whereas the equation based on the length of the epiphyseal gap was valid for forearm lengths ≥ 24.3 mm. Together, these two equations permit estimation of the age H. cineraceus pups between 1 and 37 days. Of the three nonlinear growth models (logistic, Gompertz, and von Bertalanffy), the logistic equation provided the best fit to the empirical curves for body mass and forearm length.
Ten radio-tagged hedgehogs Erinaceus europaeus (Linnaeus, 1758) were monitored during the winter of 2001/2002 in a Danish rural area. The study was aimed at measuring parameters essential for hibernation success and the fate of the mainly juvenile hedgehogs being recorded. The average duration of hibernation was found to be 179 days for juveniles (n = 6) and 198 days for adult females (n = 3). The most often used nesting habitat types were forested areas (55%). The hedgehogs typically used 2 nests during the hibernation period, but up to 4 different nests used by one hedgehog were found. Time spent in different nests varied considerably (6-187 days). The average weight loss during hibernation was 22.1% for juveniles and 30.2% for adult females. Minimum body mass sufficient for survival was registered to be 513 g prior to hibernation. Nine of the hedgehogs survived until departure from their hibernacula, while the fate of 1 juvenile is unknown. Indication was thus found that the minimum weight required to survive the winter has previously been overestimated.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of oxidative stress (OS) reduction by using pyridoindole (PI) antioxidants in adjuvant arthritis (AA). The substances tested were stobadine dipalmitate (STB) and SMe1. AA was used as animal model. The experiments included healthy animals, control arthritic animals and arthritic animals with administration of PI in the oral daily dose of 15 mg/kg b.m during 28 experimental days. The rats were sacrificed on day 28. Clinical and biochemical parameters were determined. The effect of PI administration was evaluated on the basis of the following parameters: (a) arthritis (volume of hind paws - HPW, change of animal body mass - CBM), (b) OS (chemiluminescence of whole blood - CWB, levels of thiobarbituric acid reacting substance - TBARS and of HNE- and MDA-protein adducts in plasma and activity of γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in hind paw joint homogenates). The PI studied significantly increased the CBM of animals and corrected the HPW. STB also significantly decreased the activity of GGT in joint homogenates. SMe1 was more effective in decreasing plasmatic TBARS levels, but STB was more effective in reducing plasmatic HNE- and MDA-protein adducts. The assay for HNE- and MDA-adducts in plasma as a function of time was applied for the first time in AA. STB markedly decreased spontaneous and PMA-stimulated CWB and reduced neutrophil count. In summary, STB was more effective than SMe1 in reducing OS in AA. Our results showed that the reduction of OS in arthritis also corrected the clinical manifestations of the disease.
