The same young cropping ‘Regina’ sweet cherry trees were foliar treated with prohexadione-calcium (Pro- Ca) in two consecutive years at a concentration of [ 125, 125 x 2, 250 ]-(A) and [ 250, 375, 500 ]-(B) mg ProCa l-1, respectively. The following year some trees from A-treatments were left untreated to observe carry-over effects (C). None of A-treatments influenced tree trunk, shoot extension and internode growth, whereas B-treatments reduced shoot extension and internode length, simultaneously increasing flower bud density, particularly by 500 mg ProCa l-1. There were no carry-over effects produced by C-trees, except some retardation in shoot extension. None of the treatments influenced the tree cropping level. Fruit diameter was reduced by A-treatments, but fruit shape (L/D ratio) and mass were reduced by treatments B, and such reduction was also exhibited by C-trees (residual effects).
The effect of BA, GA3 and BA+GA3 on fl owering of peach-leaved bellfl ower (Campanula persicifolia L.) ‘Alba’, grown in an unheated plastic tunnel or in open fi eld, was investigated. Bioregulators at the following applications: 0, 100, 200, 400 mg x dm-3, were applied foliarly twice. It has been found that the cultivation of peach-leaved bellfl ower in an unheated plastic tunnel accelerates flowering of plants by about 2 – 3 weeks, compared to open field cultivation, in the fi rst and second year of fl owering of plants. It is advisable to apply gibberellic acid at a concentration of 400 mg x dm-3 in plastic tunnel cultivation of bellfl ower and at a concentration of 200 mg x dm-3 in field cultivation, since this treatment accelerates flowering by 2 – 9 days. It is recommended that gibberellic acid should be applied at a concentration of 400 mg x dm-3, which extends the fl owering period of peach-leaved bellfl ower grown in a plastic tunnel by 6 – 13 days. When peach-leaved bellfl ower is grown in an unheated plastic tunnel, full fl owering is predicted to occur in the fi rst or second week from the beginning of fl owering of plants. When bellfl ower is grown in open fi eld, full bloom of infl orescences is expected in the second week of flowering of plants. Irrespective of the type of substance applied in both years of cultivation, in the unheated plastic tunnel the largest amount of inflorescences was ready for cutting in the first decade of June, and in the field in the second decade of June.
During the cold storage of sweet cherry, severe losses can occur due to the water loss, phytopathogenic fungi and physiological disorders. The aim of this research was to assess the effects of treatments with NAA (α-naphthaleneacetic acid), BA (6-benzyladenine), and GA3 (gibberellic acid) on fruit quality at harvest and after 21 days of storage under two regimes, including 0°C, RH (relative humidity) 90% and 3°C, RH 70%, and after additional shelf life exposure. Sweet cherry cultivars – ‘Summit’, ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’ – were treated with bioregulators at the end of flowering. NAA significantly increased the fruit weight at harvest compared to the control in all cultivars assessed. BA stimulated the fruit growth in ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’, while it was ineffective in ‘Summit’. GA3 caused significant increase in fruit weight by 8.3% in ‘Kordia’ only. Moreover, BA and GA3 induced a higher firmness of fruits at harvest. Weight loss of fruits during storage at 0°C, RH 90%, was increased with NAA and reduced with GA3 in ‘Regina’ only. BA and GA3 reduced the weight loss of sweet cherry fruits stored at 3°C, RH 70%. Bioregulator treatments increased TA (titratable acidity) in fruits at harvest, while the effects on TA during storage were variable depending on the cultivar. ‘Summit’ had the highest sensitivity to storage fruit rot. BA and GA3 decreased the disease occurrence on fruits stored at 0°C in ‘Summit’ and ‘Kordia’.
