Biomass in Poland has the greatest technical potential of all domestic sources of renewable energy. Solid biomass from forestry, agriculture (energy crops and vegetable waste), food processing and biogas summary potential is estimate at 610 PJyear-1. Biomass in Poland has the best chance of development. The use of biomass as a fuel, especially in large combustion plants with a capacity of 50 MW, allows you to limit (in Poland, about 90 objects) of CO2 emissions in the national balance sheet. This is an important element of the CO2 reduction potential, while maintaining the desired level of electricity production.
This analysis touches upon an evaluation and estimation of the potential of communes in Małopolska voivodeship in terms of energetic use of plant biomass. The research results showed that if biomass, in the form of straw and hay not used in agriculture and willow (salix) cultivated on lands out of agricultural production, was marked for energetic aims, the generation of about 8.3 PJ of energy would be possible. It was also pinpointed that within the group of communes with the highest potential of hay and willow for energetic use (25% of communes), environmental (the quality of production space) and economic factors (the area structure, and configuration, etc.) will hinder the development of the biomass market. The same conditions which contributed to the regress of agriculture are seen as an obstacle to effective and profitable biomass production. The only real opportunity for development of the biomass market is seen in straw, which can be acquired in communes with the best natural and economic conditions.
The increasing energy consumption not only limits its accessibility but also contributes to the exhaustion of known and examined sources of that energy and the growth of its cost but mostly causes the increased emission of so-called greenhouse gasses – CO2, SOx, NOx, methane and so on. Those gases are responsible for significant climatic changes on our globe. Burning wood even though to a smaller extend than burning coal also contributes to that fact. Coal and wood as the result of burning simultaneously generate toxic substances – cancerogenic benzo(a)pyrene, heavy metals as well as dioxins and furans.

This paper presents the results of a research on the influence of potato pulp content in a mixture with oat bran on the power demand of the pelletization process and on the quality of the produced pellets, in the context of use thereof as a heating fuel. The tests of the densification of the pulp and bran mixture were carried out on a work stand whose main element was a P-300 pellet mill with the ‘flat matrix-densification rolls’ system. 24 h after the pellets left the working system, their kinetic durability was established with the use of a Holmen tester. The research results obtained in this way allowed concluding that increasing the potato pulp content in a mixture with oat bran from 15 to 20% caused a reduction of the power demand of the pellet mill. It was also established that as the pulp content in a mixture with oat bran increases from 15 to 25%, the value of the kinetic durability of the pellets determined using Holmen and Pfost methods decreases.
Biomass is a readily available, renewable and environmentally friendly source of energy. Exploiting renewable organic matter for energy production is showing a growing tendency worldwide including in Hungary. Forest plantations with large numbers of plants (short rotation coppices) that provide a homogeneous, locally available raw material of various fast growing deciduous wood species are broadly supported. In our research we have investigated the financial viability of a short rotation energy forest plantation in the Kunság region of Hungary. Both the EU and Hungary provide economic incentives for the creation and propagation of bio-energy producing facilities. Our results show that the enterprise could not generate profit for the period examined without the help of such subsidies. There are several obstacles that farmers are facing such as the initial high capital outlay, technological shortcomings of the harvesting methods, high logistics costs and suppressed purchasing prices.
The paper describes two modified methods to determine the main parameters of the biosorption system. One of them - biomass amount, is an important technological parameter that is needed for technological calculations of the equipment, for the evaluation of oxidation potential and biomass growth in accordance with decomposed pollutants, etc. Typically, VSS (volatile suspended solids) are used as a measure of microorganisms, but accurate evaluation of the organic part of biomass on the sorbent surface is complicated. Thermal investigation methods are based on different sorbent and biomass burning temperatures and the obtained results are suitable for biosorption process control. Another important parameter is sorption capacity of the sorbent used in the process. The theoretical adsorption capacity of the activated carbon is usually estimated for a particular contaminant. The method, which in this case involves use of oil products, has been modified for the purpose of evaluation of this parameter. Quantitative analysis of oil products is quite complicated and time consuming. Therefore a colored and stable organic compound of large molecular size has been chosen. Concentration of this compound in spirit solution has been quickly and exactly estimated with a photoelectrocolorimeter.
Civilizational development requires seeking for more and more modern methods of satisfying growing needs of the society. Living standards grow together with economic growth and, as a result, demand for energy grows as well. This fact is tantamount with the necessity to look for alternative energy sources. Otherwise, our civilization will soon have to face degradation of natural environment and shortage of conventional energy resources. Under Polish conditions, crucial role in utilizing renewable energy is played by biomass, and its importance is going to grow over the years. The present study has assessed productivity of three willow clones: Tur, Ekotur and Turbo, grown in short rotations on farmland.
