A total of 215 animals of twelve inbred strains of mice (A.CA/W, AKR/W, BALB/cW, BN/aW,C57BL/6W, C57Bl/10W, CBA/W, CBAT6/W, C3H/W, DBA/2W, 129Sl/SvW and HLB/219J) bred at the Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology, Warsaw (Oncology Centre), were characterized In terms of five blood serum biochemical indicators related to their health, reproduction and genetic background. Glucose, total protein, creatinine, triglycerides (triacylglycerols) and total cholesterol were determined in mice aged four months. Significant interstrain differences were found among nearly all parameters considered, with the exception of total protein. The level of triglycerides showed wide interstrain differences and revealed a similar variation trend as the total cholesterol.For cholesterol and triglycerides, significant differences between sexes for the majority of strains were found. The results obtained may be important in the selection of experimental animals,for analysis of changes associated with various diseases, and for the explanation of their genetic background.
Changes in activity of one of the most important enzymes of nitrogen compound metabolism - glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH EC 1.4.1.2-4) under the conditions of variable concentrations of Cd2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ were investigated. Dry matter increase and glutathione (GSH) levels varying under these conditions were also analyzed. The obtained results show a close relationship between the concentration of the investigated metal ions, especially Cd2+, and the metabolism of primary amino acids. The increase of the heavy metal concentration resulted in a many-fold GDH activity increase, significant decrease of the seedling mass, and lowering of the GSH level. The increase of GDH activity may attest to the important role of that enzyme in catabolic processes intensified under these conditions, or to the increasing importance of the reductive amination of 2-oxoglutarate in the states of physiological stress caused by the presence of heavy metals. The observed relationship concerns the plant's photosynthetizing organs rather than its root system.
The aim of this study has been to determine the effect of a diet containing β-carotene and omega-3 fatty acids on the biochemical and nonspecific humoral immunity indicators and on the results of rearing calves to day 60 of life. The study was conducted in 2011-2012, on a herd of Polish Holstein-Friesian cows. 54 calves from the herd were divided into 3 groups, 18 animals in each: CTR, TRT1 and TRT2. During the colostral period lasting for 5 days after birth, calves were drinking the mother’s colostrum. From 6 to 60 days, calves were watered milk replacer formulation. The control group (CTR) consisted of calves after the colostral period given milk replacer formulation without any supplementation. In the two other groups, calves received milk replacers with the supplementation of b-carotene (TRT1 group) in the amount of 25 mg/calf/day or a suspension of liver omega-3 oil (TRT2 group) in the amount of 5g/calf/day. All calves received solid feed ad libitum. The research showed that the parameters of the metabolic profile of calves (ALT, ASP, CHOL, GLU, UREA, ALP, TG, CRE) were within the normal range, indicating good health of the calves. Moreover, the supplementation had a positive impact on the chosen immunological parameters, including a higher IgG concentration, especially at the end of the milk drinking period. The result of B-carotene in a diet was the highest daily gain in the period from 30 to 60 days of life among the analysed groups of calves. No such effect was achieved in the TRT2 group of calves, as their body weight was the lowest. However, noteworthy is the beneficial impact of beta-carotene and omega-3 oil on the non-specific humoral immunity parameters, which was manifested by fewer cases of clinical diarrhoea and upper respiratory tract diseases.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of tetrabromobenzene after 28 days administration on biochemical indicators. The increase in relative liver mass as well as changes in the levels of cytochromes P-450 were observed. Porphyrins excreted in urine does not indicate strong porphyrogenic effect. No statistically significant changes were detected in other indicators of toxicity (MDA, GSH, ALT, rGT).

Predisposing factors for puerperal metritis in cows

The investigation was performed on 90 multiparous cows in four farms. Animals were almost identically fed and had similar milk yield during last year (6000 kg milk). Blood samples were taken 3 times (-3, -2, -1 week) before and 2 times (+1, +3 week) after parturition. Some biochemical parameters were determined. In all farms the increase of free fatty acids level was observed after parturition. The decrease in cholesterol concentration and triglyceride level after calving were accompanied. Differences in valucs of analysed parameters (AST, FFA, glucose) in cows with correct and disturbed post partum period were observed before parturition.
The aim of this study was to compare some blood biochemical indicators in cows with displacement of abomasum (DA) which recovered or died after treatment. Examinations were performed on 60 multiparous cows with left (L) or right (R) displacement and on 15 healthy herdmates. Diagnosis was made by experienced practitioners on the basis of clinical examination. Surgical treatment was undertaken during the first 24 hours after diagnosis. Almost all animals (55 = 91.5%) became sick in the post parturient period (21 days p.p. on average) with the exception of 5 (8.3%) that became sick later. Blood samples were taken from each cow immediately before surgical procedure. Serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), glucose (Glu), cholesterol (Chol), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (Bil) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were measured. Sick animals were characterized by low mean values of Chol (≤ 2 mmol/l) and normal level of BUN (12-15 mg/dl), higher levels of NEFA (> 600 μmol/l) and Bil (> 22 μmol/l), higher activity of AST (> 100 U/l). Seven cows (11.67%) died after surgical correction and all others recovered. No significant differences in NEFA, Chol, AST, Bil and BUN levels were observed as dependent on the efficacy of treatment (survival, deaths). It was found that cows which died after surgical treatment were characterized by significant higher levels of glucose (5.05 mmol/l) compared to surviving cows (2.93 mmol/l).
Albania is the country where the reserves of iodine in the natural environment accessible to man mainly through food and water are limited. This study, carried out in 1993, gived the details of the National Sturvey for assessment the prevalence of IDD in Albania. Urine samples were randomly collected from 2395 children 8-10 years old at 32 cluster sites and were analysed in specialised laboratories in Germany. The results showed that based on the frequency distribution of iodine excretion in children's urine, 62.7% of them demonstrated the severe iodine deficiency 29.1% moderate, 5.5% mild and only 2.8% of the children had the sufficient iodine intake. The median levels of the uriary iodine excretion were between 0.2-4.9 μg/dl, what has indicated that Albanian people suffer from moderate and severe iodine deficiency in all parts of the country.
