This paper tries to solve theoretically the problem of interest rate determination by a co-operative bank in the absence of preferential treatment of its members (owners) against non-members in terms of charged interest rates. The optimisation model considers bank’s borrower-, depositor- and neutral-oriented policy as well as purely commercial (profi t-oriented) approach. Obtained results indicate that the optimal rates on loans and deposits at a co-operative bank depend mainly on its preference. They are also infl uenced by market interest rates and bank’s balance sheet and income statement elements. The paper contributes to an increased understanding of behaviour of co-operative bank as social economy organisation and adds to the models of optimal interest rates setting in co-operative fi nancial institutions.
The main objective of the study was to determine whether the fact that the chairpersons of the boards of cooperative banks in Poland are women, it affects the financial performance of these banks. The study used data for the years 2010-2014 from 40 cooperative banks in Poland. In the course of the study, it was found that the banks managed by women are significantly smaller than men’s managed banks, and hence the financial result is generally lower. However, the financial performance ratios in these banks were generally higher. Smaller banks are generally in rural areas, and banks with a larger total balance sheet are usually located in urban areas.
The aim of an elaboration was to show the issue of the image of the bank in the aspect of the perception by the clients of these institutions. The main attention was returned to theoretical aspects of this issue with the vetting of the hypothesis on the verification of the hypothesis that is positive bank’s image is consequent on the quality of the banking service and the professionalism of employees, excluding elements visual, creating the image of the bank among others. In elaboration justified, that the image of the bank was identical with the image of this institution in the awareness of customers, having a contact with it in the indirect or direct way. It is also the most desired factor of the competitive edge, mainly due to character singling out, unique and long-lasting. However important factors having an influence to the positive way of noticing the bank by customers, in it among others were shown in empirical examinations confidence level to the bank and elements visual, as well as the scope and the quality of offered banking facilities.
The paper examines the impact of consolidation of the banking sector on the number of bank employees in Poland in the years 1997–2013. Using the quarterly banking and macroeconomic data and the multivariable regression model, it was proved that banks cut the number of their employees with growing concentration of the banking sector. The process is accelerated with the improvements of the macroeconomic conditions and increasing the level of technology applied in the banking operations. Banks reduced their employment with the growing value of their assets. Additionally, raising competition in the lending and deposit markets force banks to expand their employment.
. This article presents the perception of factors determining the use of banking services in the opinion of consumers who do not use banking services and of directors of bank branches. Bankers emphasize a lack of habit or need to save money as well as the habit of stashing cash at home, hiding income and/or financial assets as factors preventing individuals from using banking services. In the opinion of consumers, what makes people wary and reluctant to use banking services is the fact that it is difficult to access banks and too expensive. As a result, certain individuals avoid banks. Half of the people who do not use banks are rural residents. The declared reasons for financial exclusion of rural residents and urban residents are the same. This study encompassed a sample of N=1000 people who did not use banks as well as N=200 bank branch directors.
The paper examines the impact of development of agricultural sector on performance of the cooperative banks in Poland in years 1997-2004. The levels of the agricultural development and the economic/financial situation of the banks were assessed by using country-level and regional-level aggregate indicators based on the factor analysis. The research results show that the type of region (i.e. voivodeship and macro-region) has a statistically significant impact both on the aggregate indicator of agricultural development and the aggregate indicator of banks’ performance. As for the relationship between the agricultural development level and the economic/financial situation of banks, statistically significant correlations were found only for four out of sixteen voivodeships.
In this paper the author discusses the level of use of retail banking services in Poland, conditions of its development and reasons for not using banking services. Other factors evaluated were survey respondents’ level of knowledge of financial institutions, and reasons for their fears and satisfaction with bank services offered to individual consumers. In addition, the need for reduction of incidence of the financial exclusion phenomenon and not providing services to the poorer social stratum was investigated.
