It bas been suggested to change the present way of serological diagnosis of echinococcosis in Poland which utilizes immunoelctrophoresis for confirmation of positive results in a screening test. Diagnostic procedure should be indicated with a sensitive test, such as indirect haemagglutination or immunoenzymatic assay, and every positive result should be verifies later using a Western-blot method in order to detect the most specific reaction with 8 kDa fraction of Echinococcus antigen. Further diferentiation of the infecting species may be accomplished with the aid of Em2 plus ELISA test which detect antibodies speeific for E. multilocularis.

Diagnostic proces and choice of optimal management of cystic echinococcosis have to be related to the natural bistory of the parasite. The early and the late stages of invasion require a careful differential diagnosis with non-parasitic diseases. These are also the stages that many not require smgery. Chemotherapy, PAIR and „wait and observe approach" are alternative ways of cystic echinococcosis management. Em-18 WB test has a good diagnostic value in alveolar echinococcosis. Management of alveolar echinococcosis is based on radical surgery, prolonged chemotherapy and long-term observation.
The activities of Associacion International de Hidatidologia, Informal WHO Working Groups on Research in Echinocooccosis and Japanese parasitologists group in Hokkaido are summarized. Progress in studying both cystic and alveolar echinococcoses in Poland is reviewed. In the last five years at the University of Medical Sciences in Poznań Poland echinococcosis was a subject of three MD thesis and habilitation for docent degree.
Aim of the vork was presentation of appearance of hydatid among swine in Lublin's voivodship between 1993-2000. Substance for researches was brought from annual reports inserted into journals of official examination leaded by Yeterinary's Inspenction of Sanitation in slaughterhouses. It was proved that average 10,1% of swine on territory of Lublin's voivodship in period 1993-2000 was infected. Frequency of infection among examined ani mais were the highest in last year of researches 200 and reached 13,4%.
The autors present an extensiveness of invasion of hydatidosis among swine in Poland. It is ascertained that a hydatidosis among swine appeared most often in the Eastern Poland. The analysis of these data shows that the percent infected animals, the highest extensiveness of invasion hydatidosis among swine occur in the districts Zamość, Łomża and Chełm.
46 sera and 1 cerebrospinal fluid samples from 47 patients suspected of hydatidosis were examined by Western blot method, and the results were compared with those of the indirect haemagglutination, immunoelectrophoresis and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The examinations confirmed high sensitivity and specificity of the reactions with 8 kDa antigenic fraction in the Western blot. The above data supported the concept, that serological diagnosis of hydatidosis should be carried out using a high sensitivity screening test, such as ELISA, then the Western blot method to verify positive results.
