Background. The study aimed to evaluate the scope and level of rural residents’ knowledge on the prevention of Lyme borreliosis and how this knowledge is used by residents of some selected rural areas of Lublin Province. Material and methods. A survey methodology was conducted with a sample of respondents of the Firlej and Kock communes (Lubartów County) and Borki commune (Radzyń Podlaski County). The study group involved 100 rural residents aged 18-67 years (mean 43; SD 0.14). Results. Among rural residents participating in the study, 35% are engaged in agriculture, and 61% have backyard gardens. 14% of the respondents have experienced a single tick bite, while 26% multiple bites. Out of those respondents who have experienced tick bites, only 12.5% have undergone diagnostic tests for the presence of Lyme borreliosis. The reported bite sites were found mostly in the lower limb (55%), stomach (40%), upper limb (30%), and the observed symptoms included first of all: muscle pain (50%), headache (37.5%), impaired concentration (20%), fever (17.5%), bone and joint pain (12.5%). A total of 30% farmers and rural residents consider their knowledge on the prevention of tick-borne diseases as minimal. Conclusions. It is necessary to undertake educational activities that would not only contribute to an increase in the level of knowledge of countryside residents on the prevention of tick-borne diseases but also lead to taking appropriate measures when bites occur.
Background. Today there is a set of pharmacological ways of pain relief at childbirth, but some women consciously choose natural anesthesia. It works for relaxation of the woman, and therefore they effectively relieve pain and restore forces. Material and methods. The objective of the research was studying of awareness of pregnant women at the age of 18 - 44 years about natural methods of labor pain relief and the efficiency of using these methods in order to decrease patrimonial pain. The patients were offered to answer on the short questionnaire which had been consisted of 14 open questions. Results. The most common methods of non-pharmacological analgesia and the results of their application for women during childbirth are considered on the basis of the survey highlights. Our studies indicate that natural methods of pain relief with proper and timely application of the women effective in reducing sensitivity to pain during labor, making labor more pleasant for the mother and has no adverse effects on the child. Conclusions. Today pregnant women are adequately informed with respect to the existing natural methods of pain relief in labor and they quite often use them in practice.
A high level of competition combined with food safety related risks gives cause for producers to offer and consumers to seek means of reducing the risk involved in transactions. One such means is a food labelling system. The article presents the results of research aimed at determining the awareness of the food labelling system among young people. A diagnostic survey method was used in the research and a tool constituted an anonymous questionnaire that was completed by 451 students. The awareness may be described as low. The symbol of a green leaf (called EURO-LISTEK in Polish) was recognized by a fifth of the respondents. The awareness of quality symbols was much lower. A few of the respondents named the product on which a symbol was put and the greatest difficulty was to specify the content which a given symbol delivered. The fact that the system of labelling food products is hardly known is particularly troubling since the research was conducted two years after the Agricultural Market Agency launched a campaign promoting the EU system of symbols called “Three Symbols of Taste”. It is recommended that advertising campaigns are designed in such a way as to inform young consumers about the advantages of certified food products as well as to carry out educational activities targeted at young consumers.
The present study investigated whether phonological awareness training is an effective intervention to significantly improve reading in German dyslexic third and fourth graders with a phonological awareness deficit, and whether these children can equally benefit from a phonology-based reading training or a visually-based reading training. German speaking dyslexic elementary school children («=30; M=9.8 years) were matched by forming triplets based on IQ, reading quotient and phonological awareness and then randomly assigned to one out of three interventions («=10): a phonological awareness training, a phonology-based reading training (phonics instruction), and a visually-based reading training (repeated reading of sight words). A total of 20 training sessions (30 minutes each) were distributed over four weeks. Typical readers («=10; M=9.5 years) were assigned to the control group. Phonological awareness training directly improves reading comprehension in German dyslexic children with a phonological awareness deficit. However, these children can equally benefit from a visually-based reading training. In contrast, the phonology-based reading training has a direct selective effect on decoding but not on reading comprehension. Despite divergent short-term patterns, long-term improvement of reading comprehension and decoding is similar across all training groups, irrespective of the training method. Phonological awareness may but does not need to be part of reading remediation in dyslexic children with a phonological deficit when learning to read a consistent orthography. Rather, a visually-based reading strategy might compensate for the phonological deficit in dyslexic children after the initial stage of reading acquisition.
This study investigated the awareness of and demand for private agricultural extension services among smallscale farmers in Nigeria, using farmers in Oyo state as a case study. Specifically, the study examined the availability and operations of private agricultural extension services and factors that determine farmers’ willingness to pay for such services. The results showed that a considerable number of farmers are willing to pay for private agricultural extension services. The number of plots cultivated by the farmers was found to influence farmers’ willingness to pay for private agricultural extension services at one percent level of significance. Income, awareness, family size and total number of plots were identified as the major factors influencing the use of private agricultural extension services in the study area. The study recommended the need for the government to mobilize farm households to avail themselves of benefits of private extension services. Efforts should also be stepped up by all development stake-holders to provide additional sources of income for farm households, in order to raise their income and demand capabilities.
Natural and unnatural catastrophes create hazards and cause increasing damage not only to property, but also claim more and more lives. The cause of this state of affairs can be found firstly in climate changes1) and secondly in the economic development of countries exposed to these risks (the increase in the infrastructure value and in the number of inhabitants in these areas). The subject of catastrophes, including ecological disasters and their outcomes, raises more and more voices calling for the introduction of systemic solutions whose effect will be to minimise the financial effects of these catastrophes. One such element is insurance instruments [1-6]. This article is a continuation of research conducted in the EU states and in southeastern Poland with respect to the awareness of insurance coverage among people living in individual households as a method for reducing these risks.

Background. Diabetes, due to its prevalence and the rapid increase in the number of new incidences, has been recognized as an epidemic of the 21st century. It is estimated that over 3 million people in Poland currently suffer from this disease. According to the Ministry of Health, the knowledge of the society about diabetes is too little and insufficient. The aim of the study was to investigate and present general and expert knowledge of nursing students about type 1 diabetes, taking into account the needs of a child and the specialist skills required to care for diabetic children. Material and methods. The study was conducted among the students of nursing at Pope John Paul II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska. A questionnaire designed by the author was used in this study. Results. The respondents reported that they possess basic knowledge about type 1 diabetes and at the same time are willing to learn more. They recognize that a child with type 1 diabetes requires special support, therefore medical personnel, educators and physical education teachers should have relevant knowledge and skills about care for type 1 diabetic children. Conclusions. The majority of the students surveyed had a basic knowledge and skills enabling them to provide assistance to children with type 1 diabetes and are familiar with their needs. The significance of physical activity in the life of a child with type 1 diabetes was known to a lesser extent. The students surveyed are willing to broaden their knowledge about type 1 diabetes.
In the article different data and studies have been analyzed, that were conducted to diagnose the state of safety climate in enterprises and subsequently to find out the extant of its impact on national safety culture. The analysis of the results indicates the consequences of lack of the correlation between the imposed occupational health and safety standards and the system of safety principles acquired in the process of socialization of the enterprises’ stakeholders (especially employees). The paper is based on the assumption, that in order to create national safety culture, it is essential to build safety climate in enterprises.
Background. Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignant cancer among women in Poland. As we do not have sufficient knowledge about origin of this disease, women’s awareness and attitudes concerning the few well-known BC risk factors play a key role in the prevention and early detection of BC. Material and methods. The questionnaire was answered by 380 women, 45 years and older, in Poland between May and August 2017. This randomly selected research group included subjects with a prior history of BC, a current diagnosis of BC, and healthy women without any history of BC in the past. Women were asked about their knowledge and attitudes concerning BC risk factors. Collected data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel, taking into account place of residence and education level. Results. Among probable BC risk factors, the most commonly indicated by the women were gene mutations (60%), long-term use of hormonal contraception (49%) and overweight and obesity (38%). The most rarely indicated factors were late full-term pregnancy (12%), childlessness (21%) and alcohol consumption (26%). About 72% of the respondents assessed their knowledge about BC as good or very good, but only 41% of this group indicated overweight and obesity - one of the strongest risk factors – as contributing to BC. Moreover, only 26% of women who assessed themselves as having a high level of knowledge perceived alcohol consumption as a risk factor. Conclusions. Results suggest that education in this age group should be more efficient and more focused on raising awareness about well-known BC risk factors.
