This article presents the concept of the methodology for assessing the implementation of programmes of measures adopted in the State Water and Environmental Programme, and, in consequence, in the framework of the first water management plans for river basin districts in Poland, as approved by the Council of Ministers on 22nd February, 2011, and published in the official journals. The scope of work in the methodology concept primarily concerns two basic analyses: assessment of the accomplishment of programmes of measures with regard to the degree of their accomplishment, and assessment of the effectiveness of scheduled programmes of measures. The level of accomplishment should be understood as the quantitative status of progress of particular measures, whereas effectiveness means their direct or indirect impact on the achievement of environmental goals of the Water Framework Directive. For this purpose, for some of the measures databases and reports existing in institutions responsible for the performance of measures indicated in the SWEP were used. For the rest of the measures, the survey method was used. For the purpose of the surveying process, the preparation of appropriate matrixes with measures marked for institutions, and also of email address databases, were proposed. Also, identifiers serving to link answers with specific areas on maps that trace measures were proposed. The present and forecast situation concerning reporting in the scope of the WFD and other tasks connected with it in the field of environmental protection leads to the conclusion that the coordination of reporting at the state level and the improvement of the flow of information between interested institutions is necessary.

The purpose of this paper was to confront some selected physiological parameters that describe aerobic capacity with young swimmers’ sports achievements. For the study, some athletes with the average age of 14.67, who train swimming at the SMS Szczecin Club, were selected. A progressive test of their oxygen power was performed in order to determine their aerobic capacity, with the means of the European Ranking (LEN). Each swimmer’s sports level was presented in points [pts.]. The swimmers’ characteristics were presented as divided into three groups: (S) – short-distance specialization, (M) – medium-distance specialization and (L) – longdistance specialization. In group (S), maximum oxygen consumption – VO2max [l/min] achieved the levels of 3.95 [l/min] (male swimmers) and 2,77 [l/min] (female swimmers); in group (M) – 4.12 [l/min] and 2.97 [l/min], respectively; and in group (L) – 4.14 [l/min] and 3.338 [l/min]. Among male swimmers, level of VO2max [ml/kg/min] equaled 58.96 – group (S), 59.72 – group (M) and 62.10 – group (L); while among female swimmers it reached 48.67 (S), 49.36 (M) and 54.60 (L), respectively. The recorded values of VO2max [ml/kg/min] qualify the young swimmers to the group of people with a very high physical capacity. Our selection of Szczecin’s athletes to individual groups proved to be correct. The considerations presented in the paper bring one’s attention to the substantive quality of the intake and selection of swimmers. In the selection, it is necessary to take such physiologic rates as VO2max or VO2/HR into consideration.
The article presents the results of a research on the processing of undersize fraction, extracted from a stream of mixed municipal solid waste (MSW), into alternative fuel, in the process of bio-drying. The analysis was conducted with the use of an innovative EWA (Ecological Waste Apparatus) bioreactor adapted to carrying out aerobic treatment of waste in such processes as: composting, aerobic digestion/stabilization and bio-drying of waste. EWA bioreactors have been designed and manufactured by AGRO-EKO spol. s r.o. from the Czech Republic. The subject matter of the analysis was undersize fraction, with particle dimensions ranging from 0 to 50 mm, manufactured in the process of sorting (mechanical processing) of MSW. The main aim of the research was to assess suitability of the use of EWA bioreactor in the process of alternative fuel production from undersize fraction developed from municipal waste (in the process of accelerated bio-drying). Samples were collected between 2011 and 2012. The undersize fraction and the produced alternative fuel were analysed by AGRO-EKO spol. s r.o. and at the University of Agriculture in Krakow, in accordance with the standards for wastes and solid fuels. It has been concluded that undersize fraction produced from mixed municipal waste might be the energy source for cement plants or commercial power plants. As a result of a 66-hour accelerated process of bio-drying of undersize fraction (the standard time being ca. 7 days), the waste-mass has been lowered by reducing water content (moisture) in undersize fraction by ca. 15 % while increasing its calorific value and the C:N ratio. The process resulted in the increase of non-combustible and non-biodegradable elements. The high C:N ratio and the amount of organic substances at the level of 78 % should enable further aerobic and anaerobic stabilization preceded by substance moisturizing.
The objective of this study is to establish a geographical information system method for spatial assessment of soil erosion based on the universal soil loss equation (USLE), and to evaluate the utility of GIS with regard to soil erosion mapping. The study area, Goynuk, covers 1,437 square kilometers and is located in the southeastern part of Bolu, Turkey. In this study, USLE factors including rainfall erosivity (R-factor), soil erodibility (K-factor), slope and slope length (LS-factor), vegetative cover (C-factor), and conservation practice (Pfactor) were studied and reviewed. Each factor, which consists of a set of logically related geographic features and attributes, was used as an input for analysis. A land use map of the study area was generated from (Landsat TM 2000) satellite imagery. A digital elevation model (DEM) interpolated from elevation contours was used to generate the slope and LS-factor. Spatial vegetative cover, extracted from Landsat TM imagery, was used to determine the spatial C-factor and P-factor, values of which are based on experimental results from the literature. USLE model calculation applied to the resultant polygonal layer gave values of soil loss in tons/ha/year. These are then ranked into three classes as low, moderate, and high. The study indicated that highly eroded areas are bare lands and steep conditions, whereas less eroded areas are low slope classes. As a conclusion the study confirms that the use of GIS and remotely sensed data can greatly enhance spatial modeling for soil erosion.

Assessment of fuel spraying using schlieren system

75%
This paper presents results of research on spraying a diesel oil, bioester, alternative fuel, which can be rapeseed oil and mixtures of fuels that can be used to fire engines with compression ignition. The fuels were sprayed using an injector with a pintile spray tip. This type of an injector is used in engines of older construction with indirect injection, which commonly utilize alternative fuels. In order to visualize the jets a schlieren system was utilized. The collected photos were used to determine the cone angle of the jet. Among the fuels tested the rapeseed oil was characterized by the worse spraying characteristics. The average value of the angle for jets of this type of an oil significantly deviated from the average angles of the remaining fuels. Bioester, obtained from a process of transesterification of the rapeseed oil, was characterized by a very good spray angle. Its average cone angle was very high. The differences in angles were mostly due to the viscosity of different fuels. Average jet angles of the sprayed fuel for the rapeseed oil after it was supplemented with fuels of lower viscosity -ethylene and ethyl alcohol in an amount of 15% -increased however the difference between the angles proved statistically insignificant.
The study was conducted to examine slaughter parameters of three genotypes of meat type chicken: F1 crossbred derived from crossing of light hen of indigenous breed Greenleg Partridge with heavy meat type cocks, F2 crossbred being an effect of re-crossing obtained crossbred C x GP with meat type males and medium growing Hubbard JA 957, designed for a longer, 9-week production. Chicken were reared till 63rd day of age. Examined parameters were: dressing percentage, breast and leg meat yield and fatness. F1 crossbred (C x GP) were characterized by rather low body weight, typical for slow growing chicken and good musculature, especially breast. Re-crossing with meat type cocks affected significant (P < 0.01) improvement of the slaughter parameters. F2 crossbred (C x (C x GP) reached high body weight, typical for medium growing chicken. In comparison with Hubbard JA 957 F2 crossbred had lower body weight, the same dressing percentage, better breast and worse leg musculature, and less abdominal fat. High breast meat percentage in carcass and less fatness suggested, that these chickens can be used in meat production, as a medium growing material designed for a longer fattening period (9 weeks).
The codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), is the key pest of apple production worldwide. In Morocco, there is a sustainable presence of codling moth causing considerable damage in apple orchards despite frequent applications of broad spectrum insecticides. For 12 years, sexual trapping and chemical control were performed and the development of the codling moth population was analysed in an orchard which was in the region of Azrou. The efficacy of some insecticides (azinphos-methyl, chlorpyriphos-ethyl, diflubenzuron, thiacloprid, methoxyfenozide, spinosad, and deltamethrin) was also evaluated on neonate larvae and compared with a laboratory sensitive strain. This procedure was done to assess an eventual resistance in Moroccan populations. The action threshold was usually exceeded, leading to an intensive chemical control, with an average frequency of 9 to 13 days. The chemical control was done according to the action persistence time of the insecticides and the trap captures. However, those two parameters are compromised in Moroccan conditions because of the high summer temperatures which disrupt the action of insecticides and exacerbate populations. The pheromone traps may become ineffective and useless. Neonate larvae were resistant to five insecticides out of seven. Such results suggest the presence of a cross resistance in local strains. Overall, the insect resistance, the functioning of the sexual traps, and some insecticides properties (persistence action, pre-harvest interval) are the key factors that could explain the failure to control these moths under Moroccan conditions.
Background. Fluid intake in elderly is more important than in younger individuals, because compromised homeostatic mechanisms such as loss of the thirst sensation can result in dehydration. Objective. The aim of the present study was the assessment of water intake from food and beverages by free-living elderly in Poland. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted on 138 volunteers (women and men) at the age of 60 to 90, recruited from Warsaw and Płock Universities of the Third Age and different informal groups from the same cities. Food and beverages consumption data were collected using the method of records for 3 days, including two weekdays and one week-end day, in the period April – June 2012. Results. Average values of total water intake in the present study indicated that women meets of the European Food Safety Agency recommendations (2000 mL/day), but men did not (less about 200 mL/day than the recommended 2500 mL/day). Taking into account the criterion of water per energy intake (mL/kcal) 51% of women and 75% of men did not meet the recommendation. Conclusions. Continuation of the careers and/or participation in Universities of the Third Age contributed to less intake of water from beverages, what in turn affected the total water intake. The elderly leading an active life (working, studying) may be a risk group vulnerable to dehydration, so monitoring is needed.

Life cycle assessment of fertilizers: a review

75%
Life cycle assessment has become an increasingly common approach for identifying, quantifying, and evaluating the total potential environmental impact of production processes or products, from the procurement of raw materials (the ‘cradle’), to production and utilization (the ‘gates’) and their final storage (the ‘grave’), as well as for determining ways to repair damage to the environment. The paper describes life cycle assessment of mineral fertilizers. On the basis of results provided by life cycle assessment, it can be concluded that an effective strategy for protecting the environment against the harmful effects of fertilizers is to attempt to ‘seal’ the nutrient cycle on a global, regional, and local scale. Pro-environ- mental measures aim on the one hand to reduce resource utilization, and on the other hand to limit losses of nutrients, during both production and use of fertilizers. An undoubted challenge for life cycle assessment when used in agricultural production is the need for relevance at each scale.
The paper presents characteristics of the development level in rural and urban-rural communes, situated in border areas of three Voivodeships in western Poland (Zachodniopomorskie, Lubuskie and Dolnośląskie). In order to classify and compare rural areas, Hellwig’s synthetic measure was used. The analysis showed that communes with a high level of development are concentrated mainly in the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship, including Szczecin’s suburban area as well as the Baltic coastal zone.
Among solid wastes one may distinguish mixed wastes, segregated wastes (collected selectively) and biodegradable wastes originating from open-air markets, green areas or cemeteries. Mixed wastes have constituted the largest proportion in the stream of municipal solid waste (MSW), both before and after the changes in waste management system in Poland introduced on 1 July 2013. The other group, regarding the collected wastes volume, is so-called segregation. It has been forecasted that in the nearest future the amount of segregated wastes will be successively growing. The article presents the analysis of selectively collected wastes (paper, plastics, glass and metal) indicators from lower administrative units of Liszki and Mogilany communities. The degree of segregated wastes accumulation efficiency was assessed on the basis of conducted computation. The communities selected for the analysis are suburban municipalities, situated in the area of Krakow agglomeration in the immediate vicinity of the main city of the Malopolskie voivodeship. The main aim of the work was an assessment of selective accumulation of municipal solid wastes in suburban communities. Values of quantitative indices, characterizing mixed and segregated municipal solid waste generated by the inhabitants of individual lower administrative units of the studied communities were subjected to a detailed analysis. The data assumed for the investigations cover the period from July 2012 to June 2013. As results from conducted analyses actual indices of wastes accumulation differ from the indices determined on the basis of statistical data and the data stated in the Waste Management Plans, which may evidence a high ecological awareness of the analysed areas inhabitants. The efficiency of selective waste accumulation in the analysed communities was on a similar level and exceeded 20%, i.e. was twice higher than the average for Poland.
