Essential nutritional components are quantified in the study in addition to major antioxidants, carotenoids, phenols and flavonoids. Their antioxidant activities were also analyzed using DPPH, ABTS and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activities and by determining their iron reducing power. Results indicated that the highest quantity of nutritional and antioxidant components was obtained in red variety (4.63 mg/g ascorbic acid, 10.32 mg/g total carotenoid content, 61.50 mg/g total flavonoid content, 310.27 mg/g total phenolic content) followed by orange, yellow and green varieties. Similar trend was observed while analyzing their antioxidant activities by different methods. In studying correlation between components and antioxidant activity, a strong correlation was obtained for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total phenolic content (R2 = 0.722) and total carotenoid contents (R2 = 0.709), while moderate correlation was observed for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total flavonoid contents (R2 = 0.517) and ascorbic acid (R2 = 0.673).
Ascorbic acid is a well-known antioxidant found in plants. The content of ascorbic acid was assayed using a normal phase European Pharmacopoeia HPLC method for ascorbic acid in medicinal products. The content of ascorbic acid in herbs was calculated in % for absolutely dry drug. Ascorbic acid was not detected in the roots of Primula veris, in aerial parts it was detected in flowers (0.43 ± 0.034%), in blades (1.43 ± 0.11%) and petioles (1.56 ± 0.12%). In fresh leaves collected at weekly intervals the content of ascorbic acid varied from 1.19 to 2.39%, being highest from mid-May to mid-June. The fresh leaves contained 2.35 ± 0.18% of ascorbic acid and when frozen its content was quite stable for one year. The content of ascorbic acid in dried leaves decreased more than ten times in three months, in twelve months it was less than 1/20th of the initial level. Compared to the analyzed common fresh fruits and salads (n = 10) the fresh leaves of common cowslip contained considerably more ascorbic acid. Commercial orange juices could be recommended as the most convenient source of ascorbic acid (8.6–50.4 mg/100 ml); 1–5 glasses of orange juice could fulfill the recommended daily intake of vitamin C (60 mg).
Organic manuring have significant influence on the sweet corn growth. Important element of sweet corn agrotechny can be catch crops cultivated on the ploughing down. A field experiment was carried out at the Zawady Experimental Farm near Siedlce. There was investigated the effect of green manures applied as sunflower catch crops on changes in the content of dry matter, ascorbic acid, total sugars and monosaccharides in sweet corn . The sunflower was sown at three dates: the 21st of July, 4th of August and 18th of August. The effects of catch crop green manures was compared to the effect of farmyard manure (40 t·ha-1) and the control. Sweet corn cultivated in control and after catch crops sown on the 18th of August content more dry matter in kernels then cultivated after farmyard manure. Catch crops sown on the 21st of July and 18th of August reduced ascorbic acid content in corn compared to farmyard manure and the catch crop sown on the 4th of August. Sweet corn cultivated following farmyard manure and catch crops sown on the 21st of July and 4th of August had a higher content of total sugars compared with corn following the sunflower catch crop sown on the 18th of August. An average content of monosaccharides in sweet corn after sunflower catch crop sown on the 21st of July was higher than in corn cultivated following farmyard manure.
This study focused on examining the effect of vegetables extract foliar application on storage quality of the grapes grape (Vitis vinifera L. cvs. ‘Perlette’ and ‘King’s Ruby’). The vines were sprayed after fruit set twice at 15 days interval at concentrations of 0, 0.20%, 0.30% and 0.40%. Fruit were harvested and kept under cold-storage at 0.5 ±0.5°C and 90% RH for 28 days. The physicochemical properties of treated and untreated berries were analyzed at 7 days intervals during the cold storage. The results showed that the pre-harvest application of vegetable extracts reduced the weight loss and inhibited the fruit decay. Treated grape also had higher ascorbic acid contents, total phenolics, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl-radical (DPPH) scavenging activity, and higher soluble solid contents, titratable acidity, and reduced sugar:acid ratio. The concentration of 0.30% and cultivar ‘Kings Ruby’ gave the best result as compared to untreated control. In conclusion, pre-harvest vegetables extract application on berries showed higher antioxidant activities in grape berries, and maintained their post-harvest quality. These results indicated that foliar spray of vegetables extract could effectively improve the fruit quality, mainly through the reduction of phenolic content.
The study involving 5 cherry cultivars was conducted in 2015–2016. The varieties ‘Techlovan’, ‘Summit’, ‘Sylvia’, ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’ were planted in 2010 in the Experimental Orchard of the Department of Pomology in Warsaw-Wilanów on GiSelA5 rootstock. The aim of the study was to evaluate the production value and dessert fruit quality as well as health proprieties of the tested cultivars’ fruits and select the most valuable ones. It was shown that the varieties differed in fruit set and yielding as well as fruit quality (i.e. fruit size, firmness, soluble solid content, acidity) and health benefits (i.e. polyphenol, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid content). ‘Techlovan’ trees had the lowest yield, but their fruits were of high quality. ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’ also provided high quality fruit with high total polyphenol content. In contrast, the ‘Sylvia’ cultivar had a high yield, but the fruit obtained from it was of poor quality. All tested cultivars had similar vitamin C content.
Potato is an important nutrient source in human nutrition. Potato tuber quality is affected by a cultivar, environmental conditions and agricultural practices. The study examined the effect of dose (0.2 dm3 ha–1 and 0.4 dm3 ha–1) and date of Tytanit® application (a single foliar application at the leaf development stage – BBCH 14–16 or at the tuber formation stage – BBCH 41–43, and a double foliar application at the BBCH 14–16 and BBCH 41–43 stages) on the tuber quality of very early potato cultivars (‘Lord’ and ‘Miłek’). Potatoes were harvested 75 days after planting (the end of June). Tytanit® (8.5 g Ti in 1 dm3) did not affect the content of dry matter, starch, monosaccharides, protein, L-ascorbic acid or nitrates in potato tubers. The very early potato cultivars responded differently to the Tytanit® applied. This growth stimulant caused an increase in total sugars content in the tubers of ‘Miłek’ and had a greater effect on the discoloration of tuber flesh after cooking of this cultivar. The contents of dry matter, starch, total sugars and protein in ‘Miłek’ tubers were higher than in ‘Lord’ tubers, while the content of monosaccharides, L-ascorbic acid and nitrates in tubers of both cultivars did not differ significantly.
The aim of this research was to determine the influence of various forms, diverse doses, and methods of application of nitrogen fertilizers and foliar nutrition on the concentration of soluble sugars, ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds in cabbage. The three year (2005–2007) field experiment was carried out with ‘Galaxy’ F1 white cabbage. Two factors were examined: the type of N fertilizer ammonium sulphate and RSM (solution ammonium nitrate and urea 1 : 1), and method of N application (placement and top dressing – broadcasted with or without foliar nutrition). Climatic conditions considerably affect the concentration of compounds in cabbage. The highest concentration of soluble sugars was fund in cabbage receiving N as RSM in comparison to ammonium sulphate and with foliar nutrition treatment. In each year of the experiment plants fed RSM were characterized highest concentration of ascorbic acid. For means of year 2005–2007 foliar nutrition led to a marked decline in the concentration of ascorbic acid in cabbage. In 2005 and 2007 highest concentration of phenolic compounds was assessed in cabbage plants fed RSM. Cabbage plants fertilized 75% N broadcasted at planting of seedlings with foliar nutrition characterized the lowest concentration of phenolic compounds – means for 2005–2007.

A two-factorial experiment was conducted in 2012-2014 in a greenhouse owned by the Department of Horticulture at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The experiment had a randomised block design with three replicates. The first experimental factor were six botanical varieties of basil: sweet basil, Thai ‘Siam Queen’ basil, Greek ‘Minette’ basil, purple basil, lemon basil and cinnamon basil. The second experimental factor was container size and the number of plants per pot: 0.7 dm3 container with one plant per pot, 3.0 dm3 container with one plant per pot, 3.0 dm3 container with four plants per pot. In successive years of the three-year experiment, between 22 and 24 February, containers filled with organic substrate (sphagnum peat) were placed on movable tables in the greenhouse, depending on pot size (0.7 and 3.0 dm3). Once-over harvest of basil herbage was carried out between 17 April and 7 May. The plants were cut at 5 cm above the substrate surface. Total yield and marketable yield were identical because no mechanical damage to leaves or symptoms of leaf diseases were observed. The content of dry matter, total sugars and L-ascorbic acid in basil herbage was determined. Basil ecotype had a significant effect on leaf greenness index, fresh herbage yield, dry herbage yield, and on the content of dry matter and total sugars. Growing basil plants in 3.0 dm3 containers, with four plants per pot, contributed to a significant decrease in fresh and dry herbage yields, in comparison with the remaining treatments.
The effect of cover kind (perforated polyethylene foil, polypropylene fibre) and date of its removal (2 and 3 week after plant sprouting) on the content of some nutrients in tubers of early potato cultivars (Aksamitka, Cykada) was investigated. The potatoes were harvested 60 and 75 days after planting. The use of covers increased dry matter and starch contents in tubers, but slightly affected the contents of protein and ascorbic acid. At this method of cultivation, dry matter content in tubers was higher on average by 2.05% and starch by 1.17% after 60 days from planting and by 2.18% and 1.20% after 75 days from planting, respectively. Kind of cover did not significantly affect the dry matter, starch and ascorbic acid contents in tubers, however, more protein on average by 0.11% after 60 days, and by 0.15% after 75 days from planting were observed at using perforated foil cover. Elongation of the covering period to 3 weeks after plants sprouting increase the protein content on average by 0.05% in physiologically older tubers harvested 75 days after planting; at the same time the starch content in tubers was higher by 0.97% at using perforated foil cover. The tubers of Cykada cultivar contained more dry matter, total protein and ascorbic acid than Aksamitka, but the starch content in tubers of both potato cultivars did not differ significantly.
W ścisłych doświadczeniach polowych, przeprowadzonych w dwu miejscowościach w Polsce, o różnym położeniu nad poziomem morza, w latach 2006-2008, stwierdzono wpływ odmian ziemniaka, o różnym zabarwieniu skórki i miąższu na plon, cechy morfologiczne i cechy składu chemicznego bulw. Wyższym plonem ogólnym i handlowym cechowały się odmiany o żółtym niż kolorowym miąższu. Wyższą zawartością suchej masy, skrobi, białka ogólnego i właściwego, witaminy C i kwasu L-askorbinowego w bulwach, odznaczały się odmiany o kolorowym miąższu. Najwyższą koncentracją suchej masy, białka ogólnego właściwego wyróżniała się odmiana Valfi, skrobi - Shetland Black. Najwyższą zawartość witaminy C i kwasu askorbinowego stwierdzono u odmiany Blue Congo, o fioletowej skórce i fioletowym miąższu.
W pracy porównano wielkość i jakość plonu sześciu odmian i rodów hodowlanych kapusty głowiastej białej, w odniesieniu do odmiany standardowej ‘Marathon F1’.
