Biological soil crusts (BSCs) have a vital role regarding vegetation and soil development in arid and semi-arid areas in the world, and apparently in Iran, where they comprise more than 85% of the land. In this research, the relationship between BSCs and plant functional groups, considering soil parameters along an arid alluvial fan located in Khorasan Razavi province in northeastern Iran, was examined. The sampling carried out in summer, systematically from apex towards base part of alluvial fan, using a 0.25 m² quadrat over a 5-cm thick soil surface. Surface levels were classified into three categories: apex, middle, and base. At each level, 16 samples were taken; in total 48 samples were collected along the alluvial fan from the apex point to the base district. The results showed a strong relationship between BSCs and the soil surface features, and a weak correlation between the plant functional group and soil parameters. BSCs indicated an ecological evolution from apex to the base geomorphic level by soil development; so that BSCs are more developed on the base of alluvial fan, but their diversity is reduced.
Fast land use changes have strongly affected arid and semi-arid regions at a global scale, affecting food security of the inhabitants of these regions. This study evaluated the fragmentation degree in the Chihuahua´s desert region of Mexico by using data from the Landsat TM sensor. Nine scenes, taken with Landsat TM5 sensor from the years 1990, 2000, and 2012, were used for the analysis. The coverage of seven land uses (grasslands, shrubland, croplands, sandy desert vegetation, forest, water bodies, and urban areas) was obtained under supervised classification techniques and the accuracy level was evaluated through the Kappa multi-varied discrete index. The classification showed a good reliance level having global accuracies of 93, 93.2 and 90.3% for the years 1990, 2000 and 2012, respectively. The fragmentation analysis showed an increase in the number of patches, an indicator of the ecosystem degradation process. The patches number increased from 8,354.23 in 1990 to 9,658.36 in 2000 and to 11,469 in 2012. Simpson and Shannon diversity indexes proved a clear fragmentation process. During the period of 1990−2012, grasslands were the most affected vegetation type with a reduction of 30.7% in its area. Such reduction was mainly attributed to invasions of shrubland communities and to an increase in cropland areas.
The wild boar, Sus scrofa, was first introduced for hunting purposes in Argentina in 1906 and presently occupies a wide range of habitats. Understanding the food habits of invasive species is important for predicting the effects of animal food consumption on the environment and on human activities, such as farming. The wild boar is an omnivorous, opportunistic species whose diet is determined by the relative abundance of different types of foods. In general, the wild boar’s diet has been widely studied in the world, both as a native and invasive species, but little is known regarding food resource selection in the Monte Desert biome. Our study assessed the seasonal variation in the diet of wild boars, as well as the nutritional quality of consumed items. Further, we determined the diet selection of this species. Diet analyses were based on faecal samples collected over two seasons (wet and dry) in 1 year. Herbs were the most frequently consumed food item, with wild boars showing a selection for them in both seasons. The wild boar uses food resources according to seasonal availability (larger trophic niche breadth under higher plant diversity, as in the wet season). In turn, within each season, it selects items of high forage quality and high carbohydrate contents. In conclusion, this foraging strategy enables wild boar to maximize energy budget through food selection in order to survive in a semi-arid environment such as the Monte Desert.
The tripartite associations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), rhizobia and legumes play a vital role in preserving and even restoring fertility of poor and eroded soils. The present study attempted to quantify relationship between legumes and symbiotic microorganisms (rhizobia and mycorrhizal fungi) by describing the mycorrhizal status and the occurrence of nodualtion of legumes growing in different areas of Jazan. The effect of legume species on soil microbial biomass was also investigated. Mycorrhizal and nodulation intensity varied greatly between legume species. The higher number of nodules (14 nodules per plant) and mycorrhization intensity (54%) were registered in root of Argyrolobium arabicum. Rhizosphere soils of all legume species harbored higher AMF fungal spores than bulk soils. Our results suggest also a significant effect of legumes species on soil microbial biomass. Thus, legume species investigated in this study are potentially useful for replanting and soil protection of most degraded regions of Saudi Arabia.
