Effectiveness of nutritional education in patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa

Eating disorders have recently become a very popular disease. They can have many causes, yet the predisposing factor is very often an inappropriate slimming diet resulting from a lack of knowledge concerning nutrition. There are very few studies on the level of knowledge among people suffering from eating disorders. The existing data on nutritional education among these patients is highly insufficient. The aim of the present work was to carry out a programme to disseminate knowledge on nutrition among patients suffering from eating disorders and to assess the effectiveness of the programme. The knowledge as regards nutrition among patients with anorexia increased by 23%, an increase of 18% was observed in the case of patients with bulimia and the control group showed a 21% increase in knowledge concerning this matter.

At present, there is a great emphasis of public opinion on the legalisation of medical marijuana, i.e. the top parts of the cannabis plants rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Nevertheless, in the cannabis plants, there are many various cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD). Scientific reports to-date indicate the possibility for using pharmacologically active cannabinoids in the treatment of such diseases/symptoms as: anorexia, vomiting, neuropathic pain, inflammatory diseases, multiple sclerosis, degenerative diseases of the central nervous system (Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Tourette’s syndrome), epilepsy, schizophrenia, and obesity. The article presents up-to-date information on the results of experimental studies concerning the effectiveness of cannabinoids, with particular consideration of diseases related with the central nervous system, including epilepsy, neuropathic pain, mental disorders, as well as obesity and anorexia.

The aim of the study was to find out predispositions to eating disorders (ED) such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa in girls between 14-19 years, going to grammar or secondary school. 189 girls were to answer questions of Eating Attitude Test 26 (EAT26) and fill a questionnaire prepared by authors of the study. Both questionnaires were anonymous. 19 girls (10,1%) attained 20 and more points and were qualified as EAT26+ what means predispositions to eating disorders. Body Mass Index (BMI) was used to estimate a state of nutrition. In the group EAT26+ most of the girls (57,9%) presented proper weight-height proportions.
