Factors affecting prolificacy and lambs rearing results in Olkuska sheep population. The aim of this study was to evaluate reproductive performance of the growing Olkuska sheep population and to analyse impact of a number of factors on lamb rearing results as well as the length of ewes’ utilisation in the flock. Although reproductive performance of Olkuska sheep is still at a relatively high level, recently a decrease of average prolificacy and the continuously low percentage of lambs reared have been observed. This might be related to the rapid growth of the population in the recent years and rather short flock-life of ewes, on average 3.17 years. The results of this study confirm that the size of the litter had the highest impact on lamb rearing results. Substantial differences in reproductive performance depending on the age of the dam were also observed. Despite of poor rearing of lambs born in large litters, no significant correlation between the average prolificacy of ewes in the flock and the percentage of lambs being reared was observed. The results indicate that a major influence on lamb rearing performance depends upon individual characteristics of a dam, as well as husbandry conditions in the flock and skills of the breeder.
Analysis of the inbreeding level in the active population of pigs of different breeds in Poland. Pig breeders in Poland have made extensive use of the BLUP-AM method since 1999. The application of this method for evaluating the breeding value of pigs improves their breeding value in nucleus herds and in the general population. On the other hand, the use of many sources of information (including pedigree information) in the calculations considerably increases the risk of inbreeding. The objective of the study* was to estimate the level of inbreeding in sows and boars from the domestic pig population, which have been selected for more than ten years based on the BLUP-AM estimated breeding value. The study involved Polish Large White, Polish Landrace, Hampshire, Duroc, Pietrain and Puławska sows and boars born between 2007 and 2011. Data on a total of 16 842 sows and 977 boars representing the 6 breeds raised in Poland were collected for the pedigree analyses. During the analyzed period, the coefficient of inbreeding in sows ranged from F = 0 to F = 0.25 (14 animals). Most of the animals were non-inbred (70% in the PLW and Puławska, over 80% in the PL, Duroc and Pietrain and 100% in the Hampshire). For the boars, the coefficient of inbreeding varied from 0 to 0.1875 (1 animal). The proportion of non-inbred boars was 77% in the PLW, 91% in the PL, 63% in the Puławska, and about 80% in the Duroc and Pietrain breeds. The results point to the appropriate structure of the pig population in terms of inbreeding, which shows that the selection of animals for mating has been correct and there have been no negative consequences of using the BLUP method.
The swift fox Vulpes velox Say, 1823, a small canid native to shortgrass prairie ecosystems of North America, has been the subject of enhanced conservation and research interest because of restricted distribution and low densities. Previous studies have described distributions of the species in the southern Great Plains, but data on density are required to evaluate indices of relative abundance and monitor population trends. We examined regressions of swift fox density (estimated by mark-recapture) on timed-track surveys, scat surveys, and catch-per-unit effort indices. Seventy-nine swift foxes (42 male, 37 female) were captured 151 times during 10 240 trapnights between May 2003 and December 2004 in the Panhandle of Oklahoma, USA. Density estimates, based on mark-recapture data from autumn 2004, were 0.08–0.44 foxes/km2. Survey indices explained 51 to 76% of the variation in estimates of fox density. Our study indicates that surveys of time-to-track encounters and scat deposition rates show promise in monitoring trends in population abundance over large areas.
The oil tanker Prestige, with a 77 000-tonne cargo of heavy fuel oil, was badly damaged on 13 November 2002 off the Galician coast (NW Spain), where it leaked about 63 000 tonnes of oil. During the winter of 2002 and spring of 2003, we studied the degree of oil contamination in the plumage of the Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus. Using the Generalized Estimated Equations (GEE), we evaluated the hypothesis that the presence of oiled birds in the breeding period could be influenced by 1) the location of the beach (estuarine versus non-estuarine), 2) the presence of an intertidal area in the lagoon associated with the beach, 3) the distance from the initial spill location and 4) the month. The worst affected body parts were the abdomen, and, to a lesser extent, the breast. The location of the beach was the only predictor included in the final model. The beaches with the highest average scores of oiled birds were those located on the non-estuarine coast. The other two predictors with significant parameters in the univariate analysis were the distance from the initial spill location and the month.
The effects of powdered herbs (lavender Lavandula officinalis L., peppermint Mentha piperita L. and basil Ocimium basilicum L.) added to the food substances of three insect species: the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.), lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), and the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) on the life span and development of the three insect species as well as habitat conditions, sex structure, and the survivability of males and females were considered. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory at a temperature of 28°C and relative humidity (RH) 60 ±5%. In all the studied populations, high female mortality was found (♂/♀ < 1). The studied populations were: the rice weevil and the lesser grain borer cultured in wheat grain with herb additions, and the saw-toothed grain beetle cultured in semolina with herb additions. Among the herbs used, peppermint caused a significant effect in the form of increased mortality rates among females of S. oryzae and O. surinamensis. Lavender and basil had a similar impact among R. dominica females. The herbs applied in the experiments intensified the mortality of females and, consequently, led to the disappearance of entire populations.
Reduced connectivity among local populations inhabiting a spatially heterogeneous landscape may restrict gene flow and thus contribute to diminished genetic variation within a population. The aim of this study was to determine the role of geographic distance and habitat barriers in developing genetic structure of a yellow-necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834) population, taking into consideration the spatial organization of the landscape. A field study was carried out in two plots located in NE Poland that differed considerably in terms of the scale of habitat fragmentation: (1) a continuous forest complex, and (2) a mosaic of smaller forest habitats. The plots were separated by a water barrier comprised of a chain of lakes. DNA samples from a total of 654 individuals were examined by microsatellite analysis (5 loci). The results showed that the yellow-necked mouse population was characterized by a poorly pronounced genetic structure throughout the study area, although the statistical significance of F ST for most location pairs indicated that gene flow in the area was not free. The division of the mouse population into three genetically distinct groups clearly demonstrated the significant role of water bodies as a natural barrier effectively hindering free movement of animals and thus gene flow. Analysis of the genetic structure of the mouse population throughout the study area and also within the distinguished groups indicated that the entire study population may be considered as a single metapopulation. Our results suggest that geographic distance alone is not the predominant factor affecting the genetic structure of population, but in the mosaic landscape the relative isolation of individual forest fragments, and barriers hindering movements of individuals and limiting gene flow among local populations played a much more important role.
Inbreeding and relationship are presented in the Beagle dog population as well as the contribution of founders and ancestors to the active population of Beagles recorded in the herdbook of the Cracow Branch of the Polish Kennel Club. From four-generation pedigrees of 84 Beagle dogs (29 males and 55 females) born in 1996-2007, one-generation pedigrees of 611 individuals (267 males and 344 females) were created. The inbreeding (FX) and relationship (RXY) coefficients were estimated for all 611 animals, for each sex separately and between sexes. For the active population of 84 animals, founders and ancestors were determined. Among all the animals, 13.75% (12.36% of males and 14.83% of females) were inbred; about 43% of those belonged to the active population. The mean FX values for all and for inbred individuals amounted to 0.0068 and 0.0492, respectively (0.0070 for all males, 0.0066 for all females, 0.0565 for inbred males and 0.0445 for inbred females). About 12.28% of pairs were related. The mean RXY was 0.0104 and 0.0848 for all and related pairs, respectively ( 0.0095 and 0.0926 in males, 0.0114 and 0.0807 in females, 0.0101 and 0.0853 between sexes. There were total of 222 founders and 54 ancestors. The effective numbers of founders and ancestors were 102 and 26,respectively. There were 29 main founders revealed. Four founders contributed from 2% to approx.3% of genes while the others only 1-2%. Seven out of 34 main ancestors contributed from 4% to over 10% genes, and remaining ones - up to 4%. One individual was both main founder and main ancestor.
This study presents changes in the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in two streams in Western Antarctica (Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetlands) that differ in trophic status. The results suggest a decline in concentrations of the determined forms of N and P between 2001 and 2005. The decrease ranged from 9.3% for reactive phosphorus to 73.2% for ammonium-nitrogen. Such inferred declines in N and P concentrations are considered to reflect reduced deposition on land of organic matter brought in from the seas by the penguins nesting in the area. The ultimate cause of this is in turn the steady decline in abundance that is being noted for these penguins.
The aim of the work was to analyze the changes in the population of Sus scrofa L. in the selected voivodeships in Poland in the years 2000-2011 and to determine their direction, with consideration of hunting and level of utilization. The data for analysis were obtained from Research Station of the Polish Hunting Association (PZŁ) in Czempiń. There was found the increase in population of wild boar in hunting season 2011/2012 vs. 2000/2011, including the highest one in the Świętokrzyskie Province (256%) and Małopolska Province (264%) with the simultaneous high rise in hunting (250% and 413%, respectively). The concentration of wild boar population in 6 examined voivodeships, irrespectively of basic size of the population (level of population in season 2000/2001 in the voivodeships from group I (>10 thousand heads) and group II (<1.5 thousand heads) was increased. A moderate level of population utilization occurred to be insufficient what caused a constant progression of the population number in the studies voivodeships in the years 2000-2011.
