To compare the genotypes of Campylobacter jejuni, isolates of cattle origin were collected from 9 Polish farms and genotyped by ERIC-PCR. We identified 28 genotypes among the 43 C. jejuni isolates, and demonstrated high genomic diversity. The highest level of diversity was observed in strains isolated from stanchion-barn animals in opposition to those from the loose-housing system.
The aim of the work was to assess the phenotypic value of conformation of standard chinchillas depending on their age groups. The research embraced a population of chinchillas (1986 individuals including: 1231 females and 755 males) from the breeding farm in the kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship within the years 2003-2010. Analyzed features included: animal size, color type, color purity, fur quality, belly-belt and total score achieved for the features mentioned above. Animals were divided into three age groups: I - up to 6 months, II - between 7 and 10 months, III - over 11 months. As a result of the research it has been shown that the most stabilized features on the assessed farm were: animal size (71% of the population presented max. evaluation 4 pt.) and belly-belt (80% of the population presented max. evaluation 3 pt.). It has been pointed out that the older the animal was the higher score it obtained during the license evaluation. Other features obtained lower scores than the possible maximum, which proves that the special attention should be paid while conducting further breeding work on the considered farms.
The paper studies the economic performance of sheep enterprises, the data pertain to 11 farms of the Lublin Province in 2012. There are 3 farms presented: one with the best farm income, one with the worst and the other with a “standard” medium farm income. The aim of this study was to compare the productivity (per 1 ha AL), where AL denotes arable land, and (per PLN 1) of direct costs on farms. The area of the farm did not affect the generated incomes. The standard farm had 19.07 ha AL and the best farm only 15.66 ha AL. A detailed analysis of the data allowed us to confirm the belief that direct payments did not affect economic results. The greatest support in the form of direct payments was in the “standard” farm.

Neighbours of intensive livestock production facilities frequently complain of odour annoyance. They are also concerned about potential negative health effects of environmental exposures to livestock emissions. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed in residents of a rural community neighbouring an area with high concentration of animal farms. A postal cross-sectional survey was carried out among the 4,537 residents, aged 18-44 years. Of these, 3,112 (69%) responded to questions on annoyance by livestock odours (4-point scale), on QoL (assessed by the short form 12, SF-12), and on potential confounders (age, gender, respiratory symptoms, smoking, living on or close to a farm, and employment status). SF-12 scores were available for 2745 (88%) subjects. Sixty-one percent of the respondents complained about unpleasant odours, 91% of these accused livestock as source of these odours. Physical and emotional SF-12 scores were inversely related to annoyance scores. Better risk communication might improve QoL in concerned neighbours of intensive livestock production facilities.
The article presents the current situation of Polish farms oriented towards pig breeding, resulting from a drastic reduction in the pig population after 2007 which took place in farms holding up to 200 pigs. The assessment covered the production and economic activity of pig farms, by determining their efficiency and competitiveness against a background of similar farms from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain. The results of analyses show that the major factor determining production efficiency and competitiveness of Polish pig farms was the production scale stemming from a very low level of breeding concentration in comparison with farms from countries analysed. In 2013, on average, on Polish farms, there were 41 pigs, while in Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, there were 3096, 2285 and 587 pigs, respectively. Large Polish farms (economic size of EUR 100-500 thousand SO) were able to compete and very large farms were fully competitive. The major causes of a weak Polish pig production sector have been indicated and include a low level of concentration, no links between pig producers and commercial/meat processing plants as well as the existence of barriers preventing investment in livestock buildings adapted to a greater production scale.
The utilization of pig manure as a source of nutrients for the dissimilatory reduction of sulfates present in phosphogypsum was investigated. In both types of media used (synthetic medium and raw pig manure) increased utilization of sulfates with growing COD/SO₄²⁻ ratio in the medium was observed. The percent of sulfate reduction obtained in synthetic medium was from 18 to 99%, whereas the value for cultures set up in raw liquid manure was from 12% (at COD/SO₄²⁻ of 0.3) up to as high as 98% (at COD/SO₄²⁻ equal 3.80). Even with almost complete reduction of sulfates the percent of COD reduction did not exceed 55%. Based on the results obtained it was concluded that the effectiveness of removal of sulfates and organic matter by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) depends to a considerable degree on the proportion between organic matter and sulfates in the purified wastewaters. The optimal COD/SO₄²⁻ ratio for the removal of organic matter was between 0.6 and 1.2 whereas the optimal ratio for the removal of sulfates was between 2.4 and 4.8.
The material of the study consisted of 140 cows of PHF breed, reared in the farm equipped with the automatic milking system (AMS). Cows in different lactations (from 1 to 5) were reared in the period from May 2011 to April 2013. The daily distribution of milkings (12, two-hours periods) was analyzed according to: cows’ age (primiparous and multiparous), the average milk production per milking during the whole lactation (<12.5 kg, ≥12.5 kg) and season (spring, summer, autumn, winter). The statistical analysis was conducted with the use of the χ2 independence test. It was noted that the daily distribution of milkings was statistically conditioned by all analyzed factors. The first peak of the increased milking frequency was obtained during midday hours and the next one during late night hours, i.e. during hours that are generally different from the typical milking hours in farms that do not use AMS. The lowest milking frequency was recorded during milking hours typical for farms that do not use the AMS.
The value of the routine analyses, applied until present, of whole blood, serum and urine for bioelements is limited. The blood mineral level does not often correspond to the content of minerals in the whole body because the composition of plasma results from supplementation of deficiencies by different homeostatic mechanisms. Moreover, the blood concentration of bioelements is relatively low and depends on a current diet, therefore the diagnostic value of such analytical results may be fairly small. Studies have shown that the analysis of hair and nails are an appropriate alternative for blood and urine tests or for biopsy. Chemical treatments in agriculture, animal production and food processing introduce many food contaminants into the food chain. Organic methods in agriculture are safer and therefore very important. Nutrition based on organically produced foods and anthroposophic lifestyle can play an important role in health prophylaxis The objective of this study was to determine correlations between concentrations of 29 major and trace elements in cow’s milk and hair. The experimental material consisted of 33 cows of Polish Holstein-Fresian (HF) breed from three dairy organic farms. All the farms were located in one climatic zone and under similar soil conditions. The cows were kept in traditional tiedup barns. The feeding was traditional, with ration components given separately. The cows were grazed from May to October. Depending on pasture yield and availability of other feeds, the feeding ration was supplemented with hay, straw, silage and cereals. Samples of milk and hair for analyses of minerals were collected in September, i.e. during the pasture feeding. The hair was taken from the poll. The concentration of Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, S, B, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ge, I, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, Si, Sn, Sr, V, Zn, Al, As, Cd, Hg, Pb was determined. The content of toxic elements in milk was low and below the admissible level. The statistically significant positive correlations between concentration in milk and in hair were detected for such elements as Ba, Ge, Mo and Pb. In the case of major elements K and Mg and trace elements Al, As, Co, Fe, Hg, Se, Sr, positive correlations were observed but they were not statistically significant. Negative correlations occurred for such elements as Cr, Cu, I, Li, Ni, S, Si, Sn, V and Zn. It was only for V and Zn that they were statistically significant. Very low values (near zero) of coefficient r were observed for Ca, Cd, Li, Mn, Na, Ni, P, S and Sn. It seems that broader investigations of mineral composition of cow’s hair could be useful for establishing reference values for some elements and would make a contribution to better animals’ welfare.
The studies were carried out on 9 farms which deals with meat race of rabbits breeding. The basic herds had from 28 to 63 rabbits (total 275 rabbits) on Choszczno and Recz district in West Pomerania province. The study was based on two flotation methods:Willis-Schlaaf for qualitative and McMaster for quantitative analysis, which helped to establish the number of oocysts in 1g of feces (OPG). Ten species of coccidian were found in which 9 were intestinal (E. exigua, E. perforans, E. media, E. magna, E. irresidua, E. coecicola, E. flavescens, E. piriformis, E. intestinalis) and one was living in liver (E. stiedai). Baycox (Bayer) was used in drinking water in a dose of 25 ppm in 1 liter of water for 2 days. In rabbits from the experimental groups higher weight gain and lower mortality compared to the control group animals were observed. The results highlight the beneficial effects of coccidiostats used in the production effects in rabbits.
Three parts of the large intestine, i.e. the dorsal and ventral colon, and caecum in 41 working horses from small farms in southern Poland were examined. Five species of large strongyles (3 migratory species from genus Strongylus and 2 non-migratory from genus Triodontophorus) and as well as 17 species of cyathostomes were revealed. The prevalence of large strongyles was observed, accordingly: Strongylus vulgaris - 80.5%, S. equinus - 9.8%, S. edentatus - 4.9%, Triodontophorus serratus - 19.5% and T. brevicauda - 7.3%. Among cyathostomes, 5 most prevalent species were Cyathostomum catinatum - 31.7%, Coronocyclus coronatus - 31.7%, Cylicostephanus calicatus - 24.4%, Cylicocyclus nassatus - 24.4% and C. ashworthi - 19.5%. The highest prevalence of S. vulgaris among all Strongylidae isolated specimens suggests that the infection with this parasite should be taken into account in the diagnosis of colics in working horses kept in the small farming system.
