As early as September 1945, at a meeting of the National Council for Protection of Nature, the need to create a maritime national park was discussed. Wolin Park itself was established in March 1960. Its seaside nature is connected with specific features: the highest Polish cliff shore is there. In a relatively small area there is a rich abundance of ecosystems. Apart from aquatic ecosystems featuring variable salination, there are postglacial lakes with a variety of aquatic plants and numerous ichtiofauna species. The island character of the park and its great diversity of microhabitats make an abundance of flora and fauna species.
