This paper presents results of speciation analysis of soils coming from Silesia. In examinations a five-step extraction procedure has been applied. Direct analysis of sediments and analysis of extracts was carried out by the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with wavelength dispersion. Examinations were carried out with the use of soil CRM S-1.
The investigations were carried out in post-exploitation water bodies (subsidence pools, sand- and gravel pits) situated in urbanised and over-industrialised region of Upper Silesia. The least diversified leech (Hirudinea) communities occured in subsidence pools, because of the very high concentration of chlorides, sulphates and phosphates in their water, which is moreover very hard and of high BOD5 value. In other kinds of studied water bodies greater leech species diversity was observed. Most of the species found in studied water bodies occur commonly in various freshwater habitats, what may point out the lack of peculiarity of leech communities in these unnatural conditions.
Protein profiles of crystal delta-endotoxins were determined in twenty nine Bacillus thuringiensis strains-soil and phylloplane isolates - from Poland. Electrophoretic analysis revealed quantatively and qualitatively different patterns of delta-endotoxin crystal preparations of these B. thuringiensis strains. The crystalline parasporal inclusions of B. thuringiensis isolates were composed of two, three, four or five proteins. Molecular weights of these polypeptides varied from 23.4 kDa to 142 kDa. There is lack of correlation between serovars of B. thuringiensis strains, the morphology of crystals and the number and size of proteins in parasporal inclusions.
The impact of biological invasions should be considered from ecological and economic perspective. To understand the influence of the invader, both its range and abundance should be known. Even if the range of invaders is well-known, the problem of assessing their abundance still occurs very often. In this study we report the results of an assessment of the area covered by stands of alien Solidago species in Silesia (Central Europe, south-western Poland, area ca. 30 000 km²), and estimated costs of the invaded areas recultivation. The results of field survey show that the stands of invasive Solidago species cover an area of about 130 000 hectares in S-W Poland, which is ca. 4.5% of the total area of the studied region. It was also found that the cadastral data and Corine land cover maps underestimate the area of fallowed agricultural lands. The cost of removing stands of invasive Solidago species in S-W Poland ranges from 123.24 to 266.17 million PLN, depending on the method. The method that balances reasonable costs, low environmental impact and efficiency of grassland establishment costs 180.7 million PLN for S-W Poland.
The article reports the results of an exploratory analysis of an air monitoring data set, collected at a monitoring station in the biggest, most congested and most polluted city of the silesian region, Katowice. In order to extract important information on air pollution in this city, the strategy of exploring the data set with missing elements and outliers simultaneously existing in the data was used. The strategy assumed the initial estimation of missing elements based on the application of robust Partial Least Squares (rPLS) and outliers identification based on the so-called robust distance. After outliers identification and replacing them with missing elements, the Expectation-Maximization iterative approach (built into Principal Component Analysis (PCA)) was used for the construction of the final model.
Background. Nutritional disorders constitute a significant clinical problem in the 21st century. The problems of overweight and obesity concern not only adults, but are also increasingly affecting developing children. Material and methods. The study was conducted among parents of children aged 10-13 years. Based on the data obtained from questionnaires distributed to the parents, body mass index (BMI) and degree of nutrition was determined and the influence of socio-demographic factors on the nutritional status of children was analyzed. Results. This study found that approximately 16% of children aged 10-13 are categorized as overweight, and 26% are categorized as obese. Place of residence has a significant effect on the BMI of included children, with those living in a country being characterized by a significantly lower BMI compared to those living in a town or city (p=0.008). Children whose parents are overweight or obese are characterized by a higher BMI compared to children whose parents are not overweight or obese (p=0.001). Conclusions. This study shows that the presence of overweight or obesity in a parent is correlated with a higher BMI in their children. In addition, children living in the countryside have a significantly lower average BMI compared to children living in a town or city.
