In the direction of the frontal dam of the reservoir mean concentrations of substances dissolved in water were reduced while those of oxygen, phosphorus, and ammonium ions increased, bringing about distinct differences between the three parts of the impoundment, conditioned by the seasonality of water inflow to the reservoir. In summer and autumn in the different parts of the reservoir a similar chemical composition of waters was observed, while in winter and during the spring rise it was distinctly differentiated.
The phytoplankton in a lowland dam reservoir was studied in the third and fourth year after filling. The increasing concentrations of phosphates, ammonium ions and dissolved organic carbon were favourable for the development of blue-green algae. Besides Cyanophyta small green algae occurred in great numbers while in spring and autumn diatoms dominated in the phytoplankton biomass. High average densities in summer (4.5-5 10³ ind. dm-³) and biomass exceeding 8 mg dm-³ suggested that in accordance with the natural characteristics of waters of the peat-forest catchment area, there developed communities typical of eutrophic waters.
The catchment area, its hydrology, and the quality of waters feeding the newly constructed Siemianówka dam reservoir are described. In the typically lowland basin of the reservoir forest-marshy area predominate, no industrial plants or sources of point pollution of surface waters occurring here. This type of basin determines high concentrations of phosphorus, ammonium ions, and DOC in waters supplying the reservoir. The morphology of the impoundment is favourable for the constant resuspension of sediments and great concentrations of N and P compounds in the waters feeding the reservoir will result in the development of an eutrophic water body.
The paper presents an analysis of the possibility to facilifete floods in the Narew National Park from the Siemianówka Reservoir. The analysis has been based on a series of calculations made with the use of simulation-optimization model of water management in the Upper Narew. Considering various reservoir parameters, amounts and periods of floods and the values of typical flow rates, a possibility of reservoir utilization to improve water relations in a marshland valley is presented.
