In December 1997, the Parliamentary Commission for Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry, chaired by Czesław Śleziak a member of the Polish Sejm, reviewed the action program to be implemented by the Ministry of Environment. The Ministry’s program which can be defined as a new approach to environmental problems was presented by Jan Szyszko, the Minister of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry.
In April issue of AURA the problem of sustainable development was raised, and we invited to contribute to the discussion. The government was obliged to develop a sustainable development strategy by the Resolution of the Parliament passed on February 19th. The resolution had been preceded by a debate commenced by the a governmental report and a speech by Professor Jan Szyszko, the Minister of Environmental Protection. They both were received warmly. This issue contains excerpts from the Parliamentary debate, where the MPs indicated not only achievements, but also delays, deficiencies or slow progress.
