The diet of large (Tl 37,3 cm) brown trout Salmo trutta m. fario L. from a beaver pond in the Bieszczady National Park was studied. The trout diet was mainly composed by Montandon’s newts Lissotriton montandoni. Fish and other vertebrates were not observed in trout’s stomach. The beavers have dammed the mountain stream and created the new habitat with stagnant water. Deep, welloxygenated beaver ponds are suitable for large fish and also for newts, during its mating season. Thus, adult newts were a prey item in the brown trout diet
The effectiveness of stocking brown trout summer fingerlings (0.5-1.3 g) into six moraine Pommeranian rivers was evaluated. Three groups of experimental fish were marked with alizarine red S to enable their identification during autumn and spring monitoring with electrofishing. The results indicated that stocking was more effective when done with summer fingerlings than one- year-old fish. In the three investigated rivers stocking resulted in 3.5 to 13.5 young-of-the-year trout increment. In two cases the share of stocked fish was lower than these from natural spawning.
The aim of the study was the morphological analysis of chromatophore cells in the skin of trout. Based on the material representing three species (brown trout, rainbow trout, and char), the histological examination of 60 specimens of the skin from dorsal, lateral, and ventral sides of the body was carried out. Histological analysis of the trout's dermis revealed the variability of chromatophores regarding their morphology, distribution in the skin, and physiological state. There were distinguished melanophores in the pigment aggregation state or pigment dispersion state. There were found two types of iridophores, containing light-reflecting platelets in the cytoplasm. Histological study demonstrated the changes in the trout's dermis connected with appearance of nuptial coat during the spawning season.
