An evaluation of the effect of four host plants on biological parameters of Maconellicoccus hirsutus and efficacy of Anagyrus kamali was conducted in the laboratory. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Hibiscus sabdariffa produced M. hirsutus with life cycles which were 1-2 days shorter than those of M. hirsutus reared on Solanum tuberosum, and Cucurbita pepo L. Egg to adult M. hirsutus survival was lowest in C. pepo (8.8%) and highest for H. sabdariffa (21.8%). C. pepo, H. rosa-sinensis and H. sabdariffa produced a more female biased M. hirsutus sex ratio from single ovisacs, than S. tuberosum. Although adult M. hirsutus females exhibited variation in size and longevity on the host plants tested, total fecundity was not significantly different. Life cycle of both sexes and offspring sex ratio of A. kamali emerging from M. hirsutus cultured on the four host plants were statistically similar. M. hirsutus infested H. rosa-sinensis and H. sabdariffa produced A. kamali with significantly higher fecundity (post emergence adult counts) and lower longevity compared to the other host plants. Females with largest femur (Mean length = 0.2950 ± 0.0053 mm) were produced by M. hirsutus infested H. rosa-sinensis. A. kamali efficacy measured by percent parasitization and percent adult eclosion was statistically similar for all M. hirsutus infested host plants tested.
The cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is a polyphagous sap sucking insect with a wide geographical and host range causing severe losses in economically important crops. This study represents the first record of P. solenopsis as a new insect attacking cotton plants (Gossypium barbadense var. Giza 86) in Kafr El-Sheikh governorate, Egypt. The insect was noticed on cotton plants for the first time during its growing season of 2014. The mealybug specimens were collected from infested cotton plants and identified as P. solenopsis. In an attempt to control this pest, eight toxic materials viz., imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, flonicamid, emamectin-benzoate, chlorpyrifos, methomyl, deltamethrin and mineral oil (KZ-oil), belonging to different chemical groups, were tested for their influence against P. solenopsis on cotton under field conditions. Methomyl, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam and chlorpyrifos showed the highest efficacy against P. solenopsis recording 92.3 to 80.4% reduction of the insect population. Flonicamid, emamectin-benzoate and KZ-oil failed to exhibit sufficient P. solenopsis control.
Seven species assigned to Kiritshenkella Boechsenius, 1948, and seven in Balanococcus Williams, 1960, are revised on the basis of literature data; a key to all species and brief descriptions are provided. Kiritshenkella seems to be a heterogenic assemblage, and species assigned to Balanococcus might be placed in Kiritshenkella, as well. A new species found in Roztocze (S-E Poland) — Kiritshenkella lianae — living in leaf sheaths of Carex, and showing some morphological similarities to K. fushanensis and B. scirpi, is described and illustrated.
Keys and annotated lists of species of genera Chaetococcus Maskell, Porisaccus Hendricks et Kosztarab and Antonina Signoret from Russia and neighbouring countries are reported. A new species, Antonina evelynae sp. nov., is described from Sochi (Black Sea coast of Russian Caucasus). Lectotypes of Antonina vera Borchsenius and Chaetococcus turanicus Borchsenius are designated.
