Mycoherbicides are special biotechnology products which contain fungi or fungal metabolites as nonchemical alternatives thereby reducing the input of harmful chemicals to control noxious weeds. The present communication emphasizes on the potential of an indigenous isolate of Alternaría alternata ITCC 4896 as a mycoherbicide for the global weed - Parthenium hysterophorus. Of the various spore concentrations tested by in vitro Detached Leaf Bioassay, 1x106 spores/ml was the most effective inducing 89.2% leaf area damage on the 7th day and was further tested by Whole Plant Bioassay. Both in vitro Detached Leaf Bioassay and Whole Plant Bioassay exhibited a similar trend in disease development showing 50% damage at 96 hours post treatment. However, 100% mortality was observed in the Whole Plant Bioassay on the 7th day. This is the very first report on the bioweedicidal potential of A. alternata ITCC 4896 (LC#508) for use as a mycoherbicide for P. hysterophorus.
Entomopathogenic fungi have great potential as biological control agents against insect pests. So they are being developed worldwide for the control of many pests of agricultural importance. But their effect on non-target insects, such as natural enemies has been a matter of great concern. Recently we came across an entomopathogen infecting a laboratory culture of Zygogramma bicolorata, a potential biocontol agent of noxious weed, Parthenium hysterophorus. The pathogen was isolated from the grubs and beetles and identified as Beauveria bassiana. In the present paper, the entomopathogen, B. bassiana is reported and described for the first time from the laboratory culture of Z. bicolorata.
There is a worldwide search for the safe, effective and eco-friendly compounds of plant origin to combat the weed species and other pests which are responsible for the great impact on the growth and productivity of agricultural crops. In this present study, a comparison was made to evaluate the phytotoxicity potential of sequentially extracted solvent (hexane, ethyl-acetate, methanol) extracts of Parthenium hysterophorus L. (aerial parts) in vitro through bench-top seed germination assay (Vigna radiata L.). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s multiple range test (DMRT) were done for statistical analysis of the data. The study reveals that germination, growth and vigour was significantly (P<0.05) reduced by ethyl-acetate and methanol extracts. The present study concluded that phytotoxicity of ethylacetate and methanolic crude extracts of Parthenium hysterophorus could be exploited as potential bioherbicide for future weed management programme and the development of bioherbicide for commercial use.
Herbicidal potential of CFCF (Cell free culture filtrate) of Sclerotium rolfsii against Parthenium hysterophorus was determined by shoot cut, seedling and detached leaf bioassays. Maximum phytotoxicity was obtained from 14 day's old fermented broth with sucrose + 0.5% Tween 20 as formulating agent. Significant reduction in chlorophyll and protein contents of host was also noticed.
