Goat warble fly infestation is a subcutaneous myiasis present in many European and Asian countries. The causative agents of this myiasis have been assumed to be Przhevalskiana silenus (Brauer, 1858), P. aegagri (Brauer, 1863) and P. crossii (Patton, 1922) (Diptera, Oestridae). On the basis of morphological and biochemical data, some authors have considered P. silenus, P. aegagri and P. crossii as a single species. To clarify this taxonomie issue, the most variable regions of the mitochondrial gene encoding for the subunit I of cytochrome oxidase (COI) and of the 28S rRNA gene, were characterized molecularly for larvae morphologically identified as P. silenus, P. aegagri and P. crossii. The high genetic homology among the sequences of these putative species (≥ 99.71% for the COI gene and 100% for the 28S gene), indicates that P. aegagri and P. crossii are morphotypes of the single species P. silenus.
DNA barcoding is a practical tool for species identification, when morphological classification of an organism is difficult. Herein we describe the utilisation of this technique in a case of ophthalmomyiasis interna. A 12-year-old boy was infested during a summer holiday in northern Norway, while visiting an area populated with reindeer. Following medical examination, a Diptera larva was surgically removed from the boy’s eye and tentatively identified from its morphological traits as Hypoderma tarandi (L.) (Diptera: Oestridae). Ultimately, DNA barcoding confirmed this impression. The larval cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) DNA sequence was matched with both profiles of five adult H. tarandi from the same region where the boy was infested, and other established profiles of H. tarandi in the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) identification engine.
6 species of the five families were found in the Świętokrzyski Region; they included one species of the family Gasterophilidae. two species of the family Hypodermatidae. one species of the family Oestridae, one species of the family Hippoboscidae and one of the family Nycteribiidae. which account for 25%, 50%, 17%. 9% and 10% respectively, of their numbers recorded from Poland. Most of them are widely distributed and some of them are specific ectoparasites of numerous birds and mammals. Larvae of the others are specific endoparasites of several mammalian species. One of the species in this group is new to the region studied.
