Pchly z gniazd nurogesia [Mergus merganser L.]

100%
In 1993 43 nests of Goosander from the Jasień Lake near Bytów were collected and checked on fleas presence. Ceratophyllus gallinae, the only one fleas species, was found in 60,5% nests. Among nests where the fleas were found the most frequent were those inhibited by 1-10 specimens of fleas (12 nests). The highest mean number of fleas per nest and the highest percentage of nests with fleas were noted before the breeding season has started (in March) and the lowest after the fresh brood in May. More fleas were noted in nests with successful broods. M. merganser was not yet noted in Polish literature as a host of C. gallinae in Poland.
The most important feature distinguishing this new species from the hitherto-described members of Fimbriaria is the number of genital primordia, which varies from about 30 in young segments to about 15 in older ones (probably as a result of their secondary division). Another essential character is the presence of 9 hook-like spines at the basis of the cirrus. The pseudoscolex and cirrus seem to attain greater sizes in this species than in the other members of the genus Fimbriaria.

The food composition of goosander was determined based on the stomach contents of dead birds found along the San River between the localities of Zwierzyn and Lesko on February 12-14, 2012. The food composition of six birds was determined. The number of birds feeding in the study area was estimated to be between 0.7 to 11 individuals per 100 m of the river. The dominant prey of the goosander were brook trout (90.2% of the sample at a weight share of 80.7%), and European bullhead (70.2% of the sample at a weight share of 16.8%). The size of the trout identified ranged from 8 to 28 cm, while that of the bullhead was from 12 to 14 cm. The food biomass consumed by the birds during the period studied was determined to be 310 kg 24 h-1.
