Studies on the genus Lecithodendrium [Trematoda, Lecithodendriidae] from China, with descriptions of six new species

The intestinal trematodes of bats from various localities of Eastern China were examined. The total of the specimens consists of 12 species identified as belonging to the genus Lecithodendrium. Among them, six new species are described, namely: Lecithodendrium longitudinale sp. n., L. microrchle sp. n., L. multiglandum sp. n., L. petalinum sp. n., L. shanghaiense sp. n., and L. sinense sp. n. The six previously known species reported are: L. duboisi Saoud et Ramadan, 1976; L. linstowi Dollfus, 1931; L. macrostomum (Ozaki, 1929); L. rohdei Odening, 1968; L. semen (Kirshenblat, 1941); and L. spathulatum (Ozaki, 1929).

Four species of intestinal trematodes of bats belonging to the subfamilies Prosthodendriinae and Parabascinae from Eastern China namely: Prosthodendrium longiforme (Bhalerao, 1926), P. mehrai (Pande, 1935), P. ovimagnosum (Bhalerao, 1926), and Postorchigenes ovatus duboisi Rohde, 1963, have been identified. Among them, the genus Postorchigenes, Postorchigenes ovatus duboisi Rohde, 1963, and Prosthodendrium longiforme (Bhalerao, 1926) are new records from China.

In this paper, Limatulum oklahomense Macy, 1932 (Lecithodendriidae) is described from specimens found in the stomach of Myotis nigricans (Schinz) (Chiroptera) from the Formosa Province, Argentina and L. costarricensis Caballero, 1964 from Panama which is synonymized with L. oklahomense. Sturniratrema umbilicata Vélez et Thatcher, 1990 is redescribed on the basis of two paratype specimens and transferred to Limatulu Travassos, 1921. The finding of L. oklahomense represents the first record of the genus for Argentina, thus enlarging the geographical distribution of the species to the Neotropical Region.
