The aim of the research was to determine the effect of medium on the mycelium growth of L. sulphureus. The subject of the studies were six L. sulphureus strains: LS02, LS206, LS286, LS302, LSCNT1 and LSCBS 388.61. Eight different agar media and six solid media were used in the experiment. Some morphological characteristics of mycelium on agar media were also evaluated. It was found that PDA was the best agar medium for mycelium growth of all tested strains. The strain LS302 was characterized by very high growth rate regardless of the examined agar medium. The tested strains presented changes in mycelium morphology on different agar media. The best mycelium growth was obtained on alder, larch and oak sawdust media, mainly in LSCBS 388.61, LS02 and LS286 strains.
This paper presents the process and the results of studies on fungitoxicity level of the chosen phenolic compounds occurring in wood that can be responsible for the natural resistance of this material to decay by fungi. All together 14 substances were exa¬mined: Eugenol, Vanillic acid, Isoeugenol, Cyclohexanone, Resorcinol, Syringaldehyde, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (Syringol), Pyrogallol, 4-methoxybenzoic acid (Anisiic acid), 2- -furaldehyde, Furanone, 4-allyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol, Tetramethyl-4-butanediamine and 3',5'-dimethoxyacetophenone and 6 different mixtures of these compounds imitating their natural coexistance in wood. For the tests the modified AG nutrient agar medium method based on using a series of media plates of various saturations of the tested substance was used. Trametes versicolor and Laetiporus sulphureus served as the test fungi. All together 20 variants of the experiment were pursued on 2400 plates. On this basis the fungitoxicity level of each substance was determined and they were evaluated in regards of their potential usefulness in the practical protection of trees and wood.
The higher fungi are a rich source of chemical compounds with multi-directional therapeutic and pro-health effects. This review summarizes the results of the most important chemical and biological studies of the fruiting bodies and the mycelial cultures of Laetiporus sulphureus. Numerous studies have demonstrated the antimicrobial, anticancer, cytotoxic, hypoglycemic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of the extracts. Currently, only a few wood-decay fungi have practical use in medicine. Therefore it seems important to continue research on the effectiveness and safety of extracts and compounds of natural origin, including fungi, whose potential is not still used.
