This paper is aimed at summarizing the conclusions from several partial works, which enlightened various problems studied in connection with planning and implementation of the rules of ecological development in agricultural regions. These rules were based on proper recognition of the natural values of the regions determined by their geographic environment. It is a continuation of the concept of ecological development implementation, which consists in protecting natural resources and values of agricultural regions with the parallel maintenance and effective utilization of their productivity. The paper presents the following subjects: - natural preconditioning of agricultural areas of Kurpiowska Valley, - conditions for agricultural production, - rules of water management in hydrogenic sites, - maintenance of natural values, - coupling of effective agricultural productivity with the environmental protection requirements.
The objective of the study was to establish the ways of matching the requirements of nature preservation in Kurpiowska Valley with the possibility of rational agricultural activities there. Aside from that the point was to elaborate the principles of ecological and economic shaping of balanced agricultural areas using the Kurpiowska Valley as an example. The specificity of Kurpiowska Valley and resulting scientific issues were presented in the paper. The program as well as the scope of research carried out were described. The basic procedural principles of shaping ecologically and economically balanced agricultural areas were also quoted.
The development of agricultural production at the territory of Kurpiowska Valley has imparted a significant effect on evolution of the structure of land management, being expressed by expansion of cultivated areas through cutting out of forests and drainage of valley swampy territories. It brought about the disturbance of ecological equilibrium in this area, expressed by shrinkage of forest and bog areas, lowering the level of ground waters, decrease of water-retaining capacity of the area and by over-drying of grassland edges and near-forest fragments of arable land. The conducted studies have revealed that there is a possibility to recover ecological equilibrium in the structure of land management within the Kurpiowska Valley through seeding of low-fertile sandy soils, excluding the soils predestined to ploughing, from meadow-pastural utilization and the preference for cattle breeding in shallow cow sheds.
The aim of the studies was to determine the so-far existing level of organization and intensity of agricultural production in the Kurpiowska Valley. The statistical studies covered all agricultural farms in nine communes, being completely situated at the territory of the Kurpiowska Valley. On the grounds of these studies, the number of particular productive type of agricultural farms in the studied valley, was determined. When defining productive types of the farms, two main factors were considered: soil quality of arable land and the share of permanent grassland in the structure of agricultural land. The detailed studies covered 9 farms, belonging to three different productive types (three farms in each type). On the grounds of detailed description and data analysis, the following parameters characterizing the studied farms were determined: natural (quality of soils), productive (crop yields, livestock density and performance) and economic (gross and net production, gross and net agricultural income) ones.

Ecological land in Poland has been considered since 1991 as one of the forms of nature protection. It is formed by the residues of ecosystems, being of importance for preservation of unique gene resources and types of environment. In the study, attention was concentrated on the classification of ecological land and description of habitats with merit protection in this form. Ecological land of the Kurpie region has been divided into swamps and dry grounds. Among the ecological swampy areas, the most important are as follows: flooded terraces appearing in river valleys, old-river beds, soligenous peatlands of nearedge zone, and the residues of swampy alder carr. This group also includes peat wind-blown troughs (intermittent lakes and interdune peatlands), high peatlands and those ones with an active peatforming process, and strongly watered excavated peatlands. In the valleys of the greatest rivers of the region (Narew, Pisa) we found sandy alluvial soils, grown with marshy meadows and willow scrubs Salicetum albo-fragilis, and Salicetum triandro-viminalis and communities with Petasites spurius. Ecological dry lands also cover numerous sandy elevations, being scattered among the meadows and arable lands, and grown with sparsely wooded pine forests, scrubs with juniper, and various communities with a number of dune and grass species. Selected objects were presented and the sites of 15 rare, protected and threatened species of vascular plants were demonstrated as an illustration of the natural value of ecological land at the discussed above territory.
The available water resources for irrigation of grassland located in different river catchments within the Kurpiowska Valley are very limited. As the additional transfer of water from Mazurian Lakes is not possible, it is necessary to use own water resources of hydrogenic soils with relatively high soil water retention by application of so-called “regulated outflow method”. Application of such a method requires reconstruction of drainage-subirrigation systems, its proper operation and maintenance.
The aim of the studies was to determine the anticipated level of agricultural production intensity and development perspectives for agricultural farms in the Kurpiowska Valley under the conditions of economically and ecologically balanced development. The analysis and evaluation of the target level of agricultural production organization and intensity in discussed Valley were performed, by use of model economic analysis method. It results from the studies that shaping ecologically and economically balanced agricultural areas in the regions dominated by pastural-breeding management, requires the changes in structure of land utilization; it is supported by the example of Kurpiowska Valley. Such a task consists mainly in the transformation of a part of very dry meadow habitats into arable land and arable land on very weak soils of class VI into forest grounds. At the territory of Kurpiowska Valley, there is a possibility to reconcile the principles of eco-development with maintaining of effectiv agricultural production on adequately high level, allowing the farmers to develop their farms. It may be reached by full utilization of productive potential of permanent grassland and by effective processing of meadow and pastural forage into milk and beef.

The characteristics of agriculturally used hydrogenic soils and their properties in the Kurpiowska Valley were presented in the paper. The described soils constitute about 40 % of agricultural lands and belong to moorsh and moorshous types. They were formated under the influence of topogenic and fluviogenic type of water supplying. Most of them have the unfavourable air- water relations and they are rapidly transformed. The described soils are differentiated by the content of organic matter. This is most important factor. The reserves of organic matter range within 170-740 t/ha. That greatly influences the physical, retention, sorptive properties and availability of nutrients in investigated soils. The intensive mineralization of soil organic matter results in subsidence of soils under studies, transformation as well as decrease of the area.
Floristic composition of meadows and pastures in the Kurpiowska Valley was analyzed. The moisture conditions of the meadow sites were estimated using phytoindication method and expressed in 10-degree scale. The following groups of sites were created: moist (6.6-6.0), fresh (5.9-5.4), dry periodically wetted (5.3-4.7). The moist sites occupy 14.5 % area of grassland. They are characterized by periodically high water content in soils owing to the river floods or by impact of high ground water level, but during the summer, moist species are overdried. The fresh sites cover the most part of spatial structure (58.5 %). There are mostly drained wetlands, which are being under processes of mineralization and moorshing, that is why they can be overdried. About 26.7 % of dry meadows belong mainly to dry periodically wetted sites.
