Divergence angles were measured for inflorescences of Helianthus annuus with several hundreds to more than a thousand disk flowers. Quantitative analysis showed that the angles are robustly fixed in the vicinity of the ideal golden angle 137.508° as accurately as ~0.001°. The mean deviation from the ideal value varies for each sample. The results have important implications for phyllotaxis models, which are discussed by referring to a necessary modification proposed by Roberts.
Components of quantitative resistance in sunflower (Helianthus annuus) to Plasmopara halstedii, the pathogen causing downy mildew, were investigated. Percentage infection, latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length were compared on two sunflower lines showing different levels of quantitative resistance in the field infected with different P. halstedii strains of races 100, 300, 710 and 714 in controlled conditions. The inbred line BT, rather susceptible in the field, showed a higher percentage infection, a higher sporulation density, a shorter latent period and less reduced hypocotyl length than inbred line FU, which showed a greater resistance in the field. The very good resistance of inbred line FU observed in the field was confirmed by the measurements of quantitative resistance criteria described in this study. Percentage infection of FU was 1.4% less than BT, latent period of BT was 12.4% less than FU, sporulation density of FU was 22.3% less than BT and reduced hypocotyl length of BT was 15.3% less than FU. It seems that the criteria such as latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length may be used to measure quantitative resistance in sunflower to P. halstedii.
The epidermis of Helianthus hypocotyl can be peeled off and, in the form of detached strips can be used as a model system to study the effect on cortical microtubule (cMTs) orientation of these factors, which are difficult to be manipulated in situ, such as apoplastic pH or applied stress. In the first step, however, the orientation and reorientation of cMTs in the epidermis in situ must be described. The cMTs under the epidermal wall in hypocotyl epidermis at different positions along the hypocotyl and on its opposite sides were studied by means of immunostaining, using epi-fluorescence microscopy. The angle λ that parallel array of cMTs makes with cell longitudinal axis was measured. The variation of λ in a population of cells was documented by λ-histogram (frequency of cells exhibiting a particular λą∆λ plotted against λ value). The histograms were of either transverse type (maximum at λ ~90o, denoted as type A) or oblique type (two maxima on both sides of the transverse direction, denoted as type B) in the apical part of the hypocotyl, and were either of B type or of longitudinal type (maximum at λ ~0o or 180o denoted as type C) in the basal part. The change from A or B to C basipetally may be considered as due to the developmental trend in cMT orientation. The occurrence of B above A in some hypocotyls in their apical part strengthens the hypothesis on the autonomous reorientation of cMTs. The intermingled occurrence of A and B reorientation in the upper part of hypocotyl is interpreted as a manifestation of a subtle control of cell growth in latitudinal direction. The majority of histograms were asymmetric showing predominance of cMT parallel arrays inclined as the middle part of the letter Z.
Changes in shoot length during development of two hybrid cultivars and one population cultivar of oilseed sunflower were compared in 3-year trials. Effects of cultivar, climatic factors, sowing density, and fertilization on plant height were analysed. In the conducted experiments, hybrid cultivars had higher shoots than cultivar ‘Wielkopolski’ since the first studied developmental stage (star stage). However, the large plant height does not have a positive effect on their agronomic value. Results of this study show that sunflowers were the highest in 1999 at all developmental stages, which resulted from more favourable weather conditions and soil type. The lowest final plant height was recorded when sunflowers were grown on brown-earth soil. This study confirms that increased sowing density caused a stronger elongation of shoots since the earliest developmental stages.
The paper reports results of a morphological study of pollen grain of three varieties of Helianthus annuus: Wielkopolski population variety and two interline hybrids Frankasol and Coril. The viability of the pollen grain was also determined. No significant differences were found between the population variety and the two interline hybrids.
The effects of externally applied sodium nitroprusside on superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) antioxidant enzyme activities, nitric oxide (NO) levels have been investigated in salt stress resistant and sensitive sunflower plants. NaCl treatments and SNP treatments simultaneously with salt application (NaCl+SNP) were performed. SOD, GPx, APX and CAT antioxidant enzyme activities and NO levels showed differences in leaf tissues treated with 100 µM SNP, different concentrations of NaCl, and NaCl+SNP. SOD, GPx and APX enzyme activities were generally increased in sensitive variety, but decreased in tolerant variety. However, while general increase in CAT enzyme activity was determined in tolerant type, a reduction was established in sensitive type. An increase was determined in both types in NO levels. It is evident from these results that administration of NO donor SNP can cope with reactive oxygen species in both varieties. This study indicates that negative effects of salt stress on different sun flower varieties can be recovered by nitric oxide.
Six-week old sunflower seedlings, cv. Ogrodowy, were treated with 0, 15, 45 and 60 mg Pb dm-3, and then the content of lead and selected physiological and biochemical parameters were measured. Photosynthesis efficiency, water relations (intensity of transpiration, relative water content (RWC)) and gene-encoding metallothionein were measured three times after 24, 48 and 72 hours of exposure to Pb. The content of glutathione and lead was analysed after 72 hours’ exposure to Pb. Most of the lead uptake was accumulated in the roots, then in the stems and leaves, but when re-calculated per plant dry weight, the uptake of the metal did not depend on the lead dose applied. The highest 60 mg Pb dm-3 treatment was accompanied by a significant decrease in dry weight content. Moreover, most of the lead taken up in these plants was transported to the stems and leaves (23.6% of total lead uptake). The lead doses used in this study did not affect the intensity of photosynthesis, but a decrease in transpiration and relative water content was observed. The glutathione level in the plants varied depending on the organ examined and the Pb concentration in the treatment. The expression of the metallothionein gene HaMT1 was observed in the stems only. These results indicate that the sunflower cultivar Ogrodowy is a promising plant for phytoremediation of lead-polluted soils.
