Modern agriculture puts great weight on obtaining maximum yields. Less efficient breeds and subspecies are displaced and finally become extinct. When they disappear, valuable breed charakteristics disappear with them, such as strong constitution, long life expectancy, high fertility, resistance to illnesses, ease of breeding, adaptation to local conditions. That is why organizations engaged in the protection of threatened breeds and subspecies are being created. For example, since 1982 the organization PRO SPECIES RARA has been functioning in Switzerland, in England the Rare Breed Survival Trust: and in the USA, the American Minor Breeds Conservancy. In Poland, Poznań Agricultural Academy is interested in the status of old breeds and subspecies.
