Strawberry fruits (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) are valued by consumers for their high nutritional qualities, taste and visual values. In this work the literature review was made about the influence of different factors on sugar, organic acids, vitamin C, poliphenols and antocyanins content in strawberry fruits. It was found, that selection of strawberry cultivar combined with agricultural practices have the essential meaning to obtain the required yield parameters.
High quality planting material is the basis for good strawberry yields. The productivity of strawberry mother plants depends on many factors, but there is little published work on the effects of type and initial size of mother plants on the quality of daughter plants. In the presented study, strawberry mother plants (cultivar ‘Elsanta’) were grown in an unheated tunnel in plastic pots filled with peat-based substrate (5 dm3). The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of type (fresh-dug plants and frigo) and initial size (A and A+ plants) of strawberry mother plants on selected parameters of daughter plants (crown diameter, fresh and dry weight as well as number and area of leaves). The study was carried out in 2006 and 2007. Strawberry mother plants were planted in the second decade of April and daughter plants were detached in the second decade of August. All measurements were performed on the second daughter plant on the mother plant runner. Statistical analysis showed that type of mother plants had a significant effect on number of leaves in daughter plants. Daughter plants obtained from mother plants established from fresh-dug plants had the highest number of leaves. The initial size of mother plants significantly influenced the fresh and dry weight of daughter plants. Smaller mother plants (“A-size”) produced daughter plants with higher fresh and dry weight. The results obtained in the second year of the study were affected by high incidence of powdery mildew.
The aim of the research was to analyse the weaknesses of the pH differential method for strawberry anthocyanin determination. The work is based on practical experiments with 12 strawberry cultivars and on analysis of published papers. We used following molar absorption coefficients ( ƹ values): 26900 and 29600 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ for cyanidin 3 glycoside (C3g) and 15600, 22400, 27300 and 36000 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ for pelargonidin 3 glycoside (P3g). In order to show how the calculated value of total anthocyanins depends on the predominant anthocyanin used for the calculations, we compared the results of spectroscopic and chromatographic analysis. Present research demonstrated that different ƹ values may influence the results of total anthocyanins even more than cultivar properties. The most frequently used ƹ values 26900 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ and 29600 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ gave underestimated values. C3g was present in minor amounts in all cultivars. Conclusively, P3g with the ƹ = 15600 M⁻¹ cm⁻¹ should be used for ensuring most precise estimation of total anthocyanin content in strawberries.
The spraying with titanium is one of the agronomic practices used to stimulate the flowering, bearing of fruit and production of strawberry plants. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of titanium treatment (Ti4+-ascorbate) on L-ascorbic acid, total polyphenol, antioxidant activity, and phenolics profile of six strawberry fruit cultivars. The experiment was carried out on a commercial plantation where basic fertilization and protection of plants followed the recommendations for the species. The chemical composition of strawberries, as a response to titanium treatment, was differential and cultivardependent. A significant increase of total polyphenol content was noted only in ‘Elkat’ berries. The treatment resulted in the increase of L-ascorbic acid in all the cultivars, except for ‘Kent’. However, the influence of Ti on the antioxidant activity of strawberries against ABTS (2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6sulfonic acid) and DPPH (2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl) radical was differential. Only in treated ‘Elsanta’ fruit a significant enhancement of scavenging both radicals was observed. Moreover, the treatment caused a significant increase of total anthocyanin content in ‘Kent’, ‘Selva’ and ‘Senga’ fruit, and a significant decrease of these compounds in ‘Dukat’ berries. Regarding total proanthocyanidins, the only significant change was a decline observed in treated ‘Elsanta’ berries. The applied treatment exerted no considerable effect on ellagic acid and p-coumaric acid content in any of cultivars tested
This research was conducted in 2006 in the Experimental Station of the Department of Genetics and Horticultural Plant Breeding in Felin near Lublin. It included 7 cultivars of strawberry (‘Pastel’, ‘Salut’, ‘Teresa’, ‘Jota’, ‘Paula’, ‘Senga Sengana’, ‘Plena’) and two selected clones: 2395 and 3995 that belonged to the Department. Analysis of pollen fertility was carried out on the basis of materials collected on fi ve occasions: on May 17 (at the beginning of fl orescence), May 20 and May 24 (the peak of fl orescence) and on June 2 and June 13 (the end of fl orescence). Smear preparations stained with 2% acetocarmin and glycerin solution (1:1) were used to test pollen viability. The highest percent of viable pollen in 2006 was in cultivar ‘Jota’ (70.88%). The lowest viability had pollen of ‘Teresa’ cultivar (33.83%). The average content of viable pollen grains was the lowest on May 20 (36.79%). The highest pollen fertility was noted on June 2 (62.15%), the percent of fertile pollen on a similar level was observed on May 17 and 24 and June13. The cultivar ‘Jota’ was characterized by an increased level of pollen fertility that was quite high during the whole period of fl orescence. The number of seeds has a great infl uence on the proper development of spurious strawberry fruit. The mass of seeds from a single fruit has a great infl uence on the mass of fruits in both large and small fruit categories. Pollen viability affected the mass of seeds on big fruits (r = 0.444), but there is no clear direct relationship between pollen fertility and mass of strawberry fruit(r = -0.193 and r = -0.052).
A chlorine dioxide generating pad has been used as postharvest treatment to maintain the quality and safety of strawberries in two different storage conditions. During the short storage time (3 days at 4°C + 2 days at 20°C) fruit treated with ClO2 maintained better quality parameters, as color, titratable acidity, total soluble solids, anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity and lower values of weight loss. During the long storage time (12 days at 2°C), the parameters related to postharvest quality were generally preserved and the effect of ClO2 was positive to reduce the total yeast and mold, except the last period of the experiment when the ClO2 gas-generating pad was probably exhausted. The sensory evaluation revealed that the sanitization with ClO2 maintained a global positive acceptance in particular during the short storage time. The results suggest that this treatment may be suitable to maintain the quality during short storage and long storage until 8 days and it may be an important alternative sanitizer thanks to the positive action against the yeast and mold without modifying the quality of the strawberries.
The level of genetic relatedness of ninety-six strawberry cultivars, released in different breeding centres of seventeen countries, was estimated based on analysis of their DNA polymorphism. Five hundred fifty-eight polymorphic amplicons, with a size range from 80 to 2600 bp, were generated in PCRs carried out on the template of DNA isolated from plants representing all analyzed cultivars. In RAPD reactions, polymorphic bands covered 58% of the total number of PCR products, while in ISSR, SSR and selective AFLP, the polymorphic DNA fragments covered 75%, 70% and 67% of all amplicons, respectively. Data concerning DNA polymorphism were assembled using the PCo-A method (Principal Component Analysis), and then referred to information about country of origin and pedigree described by the breeders. The results showed that contemporary breeding uses genetic resources in a very narrow range. Consequently, the cultivars released in individual breeding centres presented a very close relationship and were grouped in one, or at most two, genetic clusters.
To study the detachment stress on the ripeness of strawberry fruit, physiological characteristics of strawberry fruit on and off plant during ripeness and senescence processes were investigated. The results indicated that the ripeness of strawberry fruit upon detachment was accelerated, in terms of firmness, soluble solid content and especially color development. The color of fruit off plant changed rapidly from white to full red in 1–2 days. The respiratory rate in fruit off plant was strengthened, higher than that on plant. Abscisic acid level and ethylene production in fruit off plant were also higher than those on plant and auxin degradation was exacerbated by detachment. Expression levels of FaMYB1, FabHLH3 and FaTTG1 were generally reduced with phenotypes of redder color and more anthocyanin accumulation in fruit off plant. Results also suggested that the detachment initially stimulated ethylene and abscisic acid production and auxin degradation, which modulated ripening-related gene expression and at last enhanced fruit pigmentation.
In many strawberry production areas, traditional bare-root transplants are being replaced by plug plants produced from runners. Tips (unrooted runners) are rooted into trays filled with various substrates. The success of rooting depends on various factors such as cultivar, growing medium, air humidity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of soilless nursery to produce strawberry potted planting material. ‘Elsanta’, ’Grandarosa’ and ‘Pink Rosa’ mother plants were planted in containers and set on a special rack in the greenhouse. Emerging plantlets were clipped with metal clips in micro-pots filled with peat or coconut substrate and detached from the mother plants after 14 days. Efficiency of the nursery and quality of obtained plantlets were evaluated. Efficiency of the nursery depended on the number of runners emerging from the mother plants and the number of plantlets on the runners. The highest number of plantlets was obtained from ‘Grandarosa’ (29.3), followed by ‘Pink Rosa’ (23.1), and ‘Elsanta’ (19.5). Rooting of plantlets before detaching them from the mother plants caused all plantlets were properly rooted. Growing media used in the experiment did not have significant influence on the plantlet rooting. The greenhouse soilless system for production of strawberry potted plantlets offers an important alternative to the conventional field grown plantlets.
Plasmogenes are largely located in mitochondria or plastids and they can infl uence the inheritance of many plant characteristics. This phenomenon is called cytoplasmic inheritance and can be detected on the basis of the expression of a trait in progeny F1 obtained from single and reciprocal crosses. The aim of this study was to examine the cytoplasmic inheritance of in vitro productivity of morphogenesis in three genotypes of Fragaria x ananassa Duch., i.e. the cultivars ‘Dukat’, ‘Teresa’ and the breeding clone no. 590. Single and reciprocal crosses were done according to Griffi ng’s method 3. The value of general combining ability (GCA) indicated cv. ‘Teresa’ as the best maternal component for crossing and ‘Dukat’ as the worst. The negative reciprocal cross effects (rij) revealed the cytoplasmic inheritance for cv. ‘Dukat’ as maternal form and positive rij for the breeding clone no. 590 indicated the nuclear inheritance of morphogenetic ability. Cv. ‘Teresa’, as maternal component, showed nuclear inheritance of that trait in crossing with cv. ‘Dukat’ and with 590 cytoplasmic inheritance. The productivity of morphogenesis in strawberry depended on the parental combination and the direction of crossing.
