This study presents results of the analysis of yields of meadow fescue and red fescue cultivars growing in several different environments (in Experimental Stations for Cultivar Testing) in years 1996-1999. The hypothesis of the lack of variances among the effects of environments has been discarded on the basis of the results. Moreover, the hypothesis of the lack of cultivars-environment interaction has also been proven wrong. In addition, the assumed lack of deviation from regression of interaction with regards to the environment has been verified. The cultivars, which deviations from the overall average for the tested species were particularly significant, have received special attention. The interaction of species with their environments has been by the system of management. Significant coefficients of regression and determination have brought to light thr intensive meadow fescue cultivar 'Limosa' in five-cutting management (Fig. 2). The lack of variety-environment interaction of Festuca rubra cultivar 'Atra' and strain AND 694 in three cutting utilization weren't proved.
Clones of ecotypes were collected in habitats of small anthropogenical influence. Preliminary selection was done during choosing the interesting samples on a meadow. Ecotypes were set in 10 repetitions in Elizówka near Lublin. Studies were carried out in 1989-1991 taking into account the following traits: green mass yield, number of vegetative and generative shoots, plant's height, florescence length and term, length and width of basal and flag leaf, overwintering and disease infection. The two latter traits were evaluated in the last year of studies according to 9° grade. Crops of the three cuts were gathered from every 10 clusters for given ecotype; biometric measurements were made in 5 repetitions using 5 clusters of given ecotype. Results were statistically elaborated. On a basis of studies, it was found that collected material was significantly differentiated as regarding to traits under study. Number of shoots and yielding were characterised by the highest variability coefficients, and they were significantly correlated elements. The florescence term was distinguished by the lowest variability coefficient. Ecotypes collected could be the valuable material for breeding.
Tractor traffic as a cause of soil compaction is widely recognized as one of the most important factors responsible for environmental degradation and plant yield losses. It is a serious problem for perennial crops, where the soil surface is wheeled without any opening operation. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of tractor traffic on meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) yields and root development. The field experiment was located in Mydlniki near Kraków, Poland, on silty loam Mollic Fluvisol. Experimental plots were established in randomized block design with four replications. Four compaction treatments were applied using the following range of number of passes: (P0) untreated control, (P2) two passes, (P4) four passes and (P6) six passes completely covering plot surfaces after each harvest. The dry matter (DM) of the yield and roots (RMD) were determined. Morphometric parameters of roots were estimated using image analysis software. Root length density (RLD), specific root length (SRL), and mean diameter (MD) were calculated. Tractor traffic resulted in significant influence on meadow fescue annual yields. The highest annual yields were obtained at the P2 and P4 treatments. However, in the first cut it was noticed that an increase in the number of passes increased plant yields. During the second and the third cut it was found that intensive tractor traffic decreased plant yields, probably as an effect of damage caused to above-ground parts of plants. The meadow fescue roots were significantly affected by tractor traffic only in the 5-15 cm soil layer. Tractor traffic increased the RLD value in a root diameter range of 0.1-0.5 mm. However, any other morphometric parameters, like mean root diameter (MD), specific root length (SRL) or dry root diameter (RDM) were not affected by soil compaction.
Seed yield and yield components were investigated using single meadow fescue plants (Festuca pratensis Huds.) grown in widely spaced rows. Plants of four cultivars (Cykada, Skawa, Skiba and Skra), entered into the EU catalogue, made the representative sample. On the basis of observations and measurements of 20 plants from two harvest dates and three vegetation seasons, the number of days till heading, number of panicles, seed weight per panicle, degree of panicle axis maturity, weight of fallen seeds, the shedding being induced under laboratory conditions, and gross seed yield. For these traits mean values, coefficients of variation, simple correlation coefficients and Wright’s path coefficients were calculated. Over the period of the three-year experiments the greatest variation was found for seed weight per panicle, seed yield per plant and number of panicles, especially in the first harvest year. From among the investigated traits, seed yield per plant was most correlated with the number of panicles per plant (r = 0.480** to r = 0.829**) and seed weight per panicle (r = 0.336* to r = 0.820**). As the number of panicles per plant increased, the weight of fallen seeds increased as well (r = 0.432** to r = 0.620**). The path analysis confirmed the finding that the number of panicles per plant, increasing in successive years, determined the seed yield by 12–23%, 40–46% and 63–74% respectively. The greatest direct effects of the number of panicles and seed weight per panicle on seed yield were observed in the second harvest year.
Badano jakościowe i ilościowe zmiany w populacjach roślin kostrzewy łąkowej, otrzymanych z nasion przechowywanych przez 54 miesiące w warunkach korzystnych i niekorzystnych. Oceniano 22 cechy fenotypowe oraz występowanie roślin z aberracjami chlorofilowymi. Przechowywanie prób ziarniaków kostrzewy łąkowej w niekorzystnych warunkach spowodowało znaczne obniżenie zdolności kiełkowania. Obniżenie kiełkowania o około 85% w stosunku do wartości wyjściowej spowodowało u niektórych z badanych prób wystąpienie aberracji chlorofilowych typu albina i striata, przyspieszenie faz fenologicznych, skrócenie liści i kwiatostanów, słabsze wypełnienie ziaren pyłku. Stwierdzone zmiany, będące efektem przechowywnia nasion w niekorzystnych warunkach są wypadkową selekcji poszczególnych genotypów oraz mutacji, zachodzących w przeżywających nasionach.
The aim of the presented work was the search for the relationship between the level of soluble carbohydrates in callus tissues of eight meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) cultivars and their growth ability on media containing Bipolaris sorokiniana and Drechslera dictyoides metabolites. Calli were induced from mature grains using the method previously described (Płażek 1994). Callus obtained from single caryopsis was cut into three pieces which were weighted and put on the media with or without pathogen metabolites. Tissue selection was performed by means of “double-layer culture” technique (Lepoivre et al. 1986). After two-week culture in the darkness at temp. of 25°C the calli were weighted again. The sugar level in tissue was measured by means of colorimetric method of Klein & Weissman according to Snell (1961). Fresh mass decrease of calli developing on the media with fungus metabolites was observed by all studied object. The tolerance of calli of the tested cultivars to metabolites of both pathogens was significantly different. However, significant similarity between the tolerance of calli of particular varietes to both fungi was noted. The soluble carbohydrate contents in control tissue of all studied cultivars were similar and their values ranged between 2.4 and 3 % of fresh mass. B. sorokiniana metabolites caused a significant decrease of the sugar content in calli, while D. dictyoides metabolites did not decrease the sugar level.
