The studies were conducted during the school year of 1996/1997 among the children at the age of 5, 6 and 7 years old from Olsztyn and nearby municipality of Purda. In total, 151 children were examined by Graham's method. The presence of eggs of the parasite was confirmed in 13.3% of the total examined population. The infestation was tower in Olsztyn (12.0%) and the lowest in Purda (9.4%) but in the former state-owned Farm village Prajłowo it reached 27.8%. In general, the pinworms were found more frequently in 7 year old children (23.33%) than in case of the others (8.69% and 7.14% for 5 and 6 year old children respectively). In the study, younger boys were more frequently infested than the girls.
The efficacy of mebendazole was evaluated as a result of six-year experience in the treatment of patients of Outpatients Clinic and Clinic of Infectious, Parasitic and Tropical Diseases in Łódź. The treatment covered 6132 subjects infected with: Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Trichiuris trichiura, Enterobius vermicularis and Echinococcus granulosus. Nematode infections were diagnosed by coproscopic methods whereas echinococcosis with serologie tests and ultrasonographic examination of abdominal cavity. Mebendazole was administered in the dose of 200 mg per day: for 3 days in ascariasis, for 5 days in A. duodenale, T. trichiura and mixed infections. In enterobiosis was applied a pulsation therapy: 200 mg a day for 3 days, a week of break (three subsequent cycles). In echinococcosis the drug was administered in the daily dose of 600 mg for 30 days. Follow-up examinations were carried out 30, 60, 120 and 160 days after the treatment. In the case of inetfectiveness of the first course, the treatment was repeated. The efficacy of the therapy was as follows: ascariasis 97.1%, A. duodenale infection 100%, trichuriasis 92.1%, enterobiosis 93.3%, mixed infections 95.3%, echinococcosis 77.2%. No side effects were observed.
The aim of this study was to estimate the occurrence of intestinal parasites in groups of mammals kept in the Warsaw zoological garden (Poland). 71 pools of fecal samples were analyzed using the FLOTAC techniques. 48% of animals were positive and 47% of positivities showed multiple infections. Toxocara cati (71.4%) was found in felines; marsupials were infected with Coccidia (90%). Giardia spp. (24.0%), Blastocystis spp. (12.3%), Iodamoeba spp. (10.0%), Enterobius vermicularis (6.0%) and Entamoeba coli (3.3%) were found in primates. Gastrointestinal strongyles (60.5%) were prevalent in ruminants which resulted positive also to Coccidia (Eimeria spp. = 50.0%), Trichuris spp. (25.0%) and Nematodirus (14.0%). Strongyles (34.0%) were the most frequent parasites in monogastric herbivores, followed by Parascaris equorum (17.0%). None of the animals showed any symptom associated with gastrointestinal parasitic infections. According to our results the need to prevent, diagnose, control, and treat intestinal parasitism trough specific control programs is mandatory for animal welfare in order to limit the spread of parasitic infections in animals and humans.
The study presents the results of a research on the frequency of infection with Enterobius vermicularis in different urban and rural human populations, conducted by Zoology Department of Podlaska Academy in Siedlce between 1998 and 2006. Since 2001, samples from one examinee were collected seven times. On the basis of the seven tests, a table of the frequency of infection and the efficiency of its detection was presented. The study indicates the populations in which all the infected were detected earlier than after the seventh test. It also presents the results of family infection examination (there were two groups of the examined: A- only children, B - children as well as parents): out of 125 families 47 (37.6%) were infected. The author concluded that the method of taking pinworm samples should be standardized to the Graham method with the samples collected on seven consecutive days, and that whole families should be examined wherever one person is detected to be infected.
