To induce the late summer cropping (July - August ) of Elsanta strawberries, grown in one-year-production cycle, two experiments, based on a delayed planting term of „frigo" plants were carried out. The plantings were started (established) in 1994 (site I, in Gorzyce) on May 14 (a), May 27 (b) and June 10 (c), and in 1996 (site II, Lublin) on June 5 (d), and June 18 (e). Site II was irrigated by dripping, while site I was not. In both sites, the early planting terms (a and d) have contributed to a better plant growth and cropping in comparison to the other treatment. Fruit yields amounted to 99, 75, 21, 452 and 290 g/plant for a, b, c, d and e, respectively. Two weeks' delay in planting term resulted in a deterioration of the fruit size, fruit mass and its chemical composition.
An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Research Institute of Horticulture (RIH) to evaluate the effect of new organic fertilizers and amendments on root growth and mycorrhizal abundance and species richness in the rhizosphere of strawberry plants cv. 'Elsanta'. The plants were grown in rhizoboxes (sized 37 cm x 1.8 cm x 20 cm), filled with 1.85 kg of a podsolic soil collected from an uncultivated field of an experimental organic orchard of the RIH. The soil characteristics were: pH 5.5, organic matter content 1.5%, P content 51 mg P kg-1, K content 158 mg K kg- 1 . The plants were treated with different organic fertilizers and amendments: dry granulated bovine manure (Doktor O'grodnik), extract of vermicompost (Humus UP), extract of humates (Humus Active + Aktywit PM), plant extract (BioFeed Amin), extract from several seaweed species reinforced with humic and fulvic acids (BioFeed Quality), a consortium of beneficial soil organisms (Micosat), a stillage from yeast production (Vinassa) and a solution of titanium (Tytanit). Plants treated with BioFeed Amin, BioFeed Quality, Micosat, Vinassa and Tytanit received also half dose of dry manure. A standard NPK fertilization (NPK control) and a not fertilized control were also included. The following parameters were measured: root growth and morphological parameters, number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) spores, mycorrhizal frequency of AMF in the roots. The chemical composition of the applied products and of soil were also determined.
The study involved three strawberry cultivars: 'Senga Sengana', 'Kent' and 'El- santa', planted in the spring of 2003 in a row system in the Pomological Orchard of RIPF in Skierniewice, Poland. The experiment was carried out in 2006 on 4-year-old plants as a continuation of the project Cost 631. The strawberry plants were mulched with a peat substrate, or sawdust, or pine bark, or compost or rye straw, and inoculated with a mycorrhizal preparation Mycosat. The mulches were replenished every year in the same amount during the flowering of the plants. The results of the experiments indicate that the combinations used did not, in general, cause a significant change in the yielding of plants during the experimental period presented. An exception were the plants of the cultivar 'Kent' mulched with straw, which produced a significantly lower yield, by 18.4% on average, in comparison with the control plants or those mulched with bark. Plants of the cultivar 'Elsanta' mulched with compost or sawdust were characterized by a significantly greater mean fruit weight (by an average of 1.5 g) compared with the control. On the whole, the use of the mulches and the mycorrhizal product contributed to an increase in the number of fruits of the class 'Ekstra'. Significant differences were found on the plots of 'Senga Sengana' mulched with straw or inoculated with the mycorrhizal substrate, from which, on the average, 71% more class 'Ekstra' berries were collected than from the control plants (non- mulched). The experiments confirmed the cultivar-specific differences in yield between the strawberry cultivars studied. At comparable yields, they differed significantly in terms of the number and mean weight of the fruits collected.
The main factors determining the quantity and quality of the yield of plants grown in the soilless system is the kind of cultivation substrate used and the level of supplying the plants with nutrients. Studies conducted in the years 2005–2006 were aimed at determining the effect of substrates (peat, peat mixed with pine bark in the proportion of 1:1, peat with pine sawdust in the ratio of 1:1), as well as of differentiated nitrogen dose (140 and 210 mg N·dm-3) upon yielding, chemical composition of strawberry (Fragaria × ananasa Duch.) leaves and fruit, cultivar „Elsanta”, grown in unheated foil tunnel. In those studies no significant differences were found in total and marketable yield of strawberry fruit grown in peat, as well as in peat with pine bark. Significantly smaller total (435.8 g·plant-1) and marketable (286.5 g·plant-1) fruit yield was reported when strawberries were grown in peat mixed with pine sawdust. In plants grown in peat mixed with sawdust significantly smaller fruit unit weight (10.7 g) was found, as compared to plants that grew in the remaining substratums. In our studies no significant effect of differentiated nitrogen fertilization upon strawberry yielding was demonstrated. In the leaves of strawberries fertilized with nitrogen in the dose of 210 mg N·dm-3 we found significantly more nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as less calcium and magnesium, as compared to plants fertilized with smaller doses of this nutrient. The fruit of strawberries fertilized with a higher nitrogen dose contained significantly more nitrogen and potassium, as well as less vitamin C and soluble solids, as compared to the fruit collected from plants fertilized with nitrogen in the dose of 140 mg N·dm-3.
Micropropagation of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is a widely used technique to produce plantlets in commercial horticulture. Unfortunately, in contrast to propagation based on runners, it is also an expensive method and may lead to obtaining plants with changed phenotype. In order to reduce such problems, the influence of chemical method of medium sterilization (application of commercial home bleach – ACE®) instead of autoclaving on the development of in vitro cultures of four strawberry cultivars (‘Elsanta’, ‘Elkat’, ‘Senga Sengana’, ‘Polka’) was examined. The presented study proved that sodium hypochlorite added into the hot medium is very effective, making aseptic environment agent. Applied in tested dose (2 cm3 of ACE® per dm–3) is not harmful to strawberry in vitro cultures and usually causes positive changes in their development (reduced formation of adventitious shoots and callus), except for ‘Elsanta’ cultivar. Thus the application of media sterilized with sodium hypochlorite is beneficial and cost effective and may be recommended both for commercial and especially amateur strawberry micropropagation.
In the years 2007-2008, a pot experiment was carried out on the effect of a supersorbent polymer on cropping and rate of gas exchange of 'Elsanta' strawberry. The experiment took place in the Vegetation Hall of the West Pomeranian Technological University in Szczecin and was done in a completely randomized design. The experimental factors were two doses (8 and 3.6 gdm-3) of gel polymer AgroHy- droGel, added to the medium prior to planting. Its direct (in 2007) and subsequent (in 2008) effect on the amount and quality of crops and the physiological activity of strawberry was assessed. It was found out that a larger applied dose of supersorbent caused a decrease in the strawberry yield. The differentiated doses of AgroHydroGel did not have any significant influence on the weight of an individual fruit (7.89-9.3 g) and on longitudinal (27.5-30.0 mm) and crosswise diameter (27.5-29.3 mm). Recordings were made of the increase in the dose of AgroHydroGel, the increase in the content of the extract and L-ascorbic acid, and the decrease in accumulation of nitrates and nitrites, in strawberry fruit. A direct influence of the applied polymer on the increase in CO2 assimilation in strawberry leaves at the fruiting stage was observed. In the first year of the studies, the intensity of transpiration in the phases of fruiting and after fruiting was increased along with the increase in the doses of Agro- HydroGel, whereas in the subsequent year such a relationship was observed in the phase of flowering. The largest index of effectiveness of water use, in the photosynthesis in the subsequent year in all the growth phases, was characteristic of the control plants.
W czasie przechowywania zamrożonych homogenatów najmniejsze zmiany ilościowe zaobserwowano w zawartości suchej masy i kwasowości ogólnej a największe w zawartości witaminy C i polifenoli ogółem W procesie zamrażania cukier działał ochronnie na mikroorganizmy, dlatego w homogenatach z dodatkiem 5 i 10% cukru występowała większa liczba bakterii, drożdży i pleśni niż w przecierze niesłodzonym. Świeżo zamrożone homogenaty odznaczały się nadmierną w stosunku do wymagań, ilością pleśni i drożdży (tj. > 5,0x 102 jtk-g-1).
