Four records of smut fungi belonging to the genus Microbotryum Lév. are reported. Two species were found on new hosts, namely M. dianthorum on Dianthus borbasii and D. pseudoserotinus and M. superbum on D. stenocalyx. Microbotryum lagerheimii on Lychnis viscaria is a new species for Ukraine.
A brief historical overview of the discovery of sexuality in flowering plants (Angiosperms) is given. The former assumption that pictures on Assyrian and Babylonian buildings represent pollination activity has to be corrected by new archeological insights. Antiquity and the Middle Ages delivered no real progress in the knowledge of higher plant sexuality. Real progress is linked to the introduction of light microscopy and experimentation. Investigators such as N. Grew, J. Bobart and R. J. Camerarius provided new information on sex organs in plants. Countercurrents of opinion remained active, based on Aristotle’s and Theophrastus’s beliefs. J.G. Koelreuter and G.B. Amici made breakthroughs in the recognition of the equal role of the sexes in reproduction. Fusion of the sperm and egg nuclei was observed by E. Strasburger. Double fertilization was a multiple discovery by S. Navashin and L. Guignard. New strategies are making the sexual and fertilization processes amenable to genetic manipulation and biotechnology.
In five monitored farms, stem base rot symptoms and carnation wilting were observed on 10–35% of plants and Rhizoctonia solani was the most frequently isolated species from diseased tissues. Additionally Fusarium avenaceum and Botrytis cinerea were only rarely noticed in the diseased stem parts. Isolates from carnation and eustoma caused stem and leaf blade rot of carnation but tissues were colonized significantly faster by a culture from a host plant. Different reaction of three carnation cultivars was observed on R. solani inoculation. The optimal species growth was observed at 30°C and it was also the most favorable temperature for colonization of carnation stem parts. In the greenhouse trial isolate of R. solani obtained from carnation crops caused stem base rot already after 2-week-growth on 1 per 5 plant in each replication and within the next 2 weeks 4 per 5 of plants died.
